Overview
SIST EN 572-5:2012 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the dimensional and quality requirements for patterned soda lime silicate glass used in building construction. This standard focuses on patterned glass supplied in rectangular panes and stock sizes, ensuring consistent product quality with respect to visual appearance and pattern integrity. It complements other parts of the EN 572 series which cover various types of basic soda lime silicate glass products.
Key aspects include thickness tolerances, length and width dimensions, squareness, and strict criteria for visual faults such as spot defects, linear faults, and pattern deviations. SIST EN 572-5:2012 is essential for manufacturers, architects, and construction professionals who require reliable specification of patterned glass in architectural projects.
Key Topics
- Scope and Application: Applies exclusively to rectangular stock sizes of patterned glass used in building applications. Other sizes are covered under EN 572-8.
- Dimensional Requirements:
- Thickness measurement with a plate gauge, tolerancing ranges depending on nominal thickness.
- Length, width, and squareness tolerances ensuring pane uniformity.
- Quality and Visual Faults:
- Defines spot faults (spherical, quasi-spherical, elongated), linear/extended faults, and pattern faults.
- Specifies acceptable fault sizes, quantities, and their location limitations for aesthetic and functional quality.
- Pattern Faults Evaluation:
- Includes types: out of square, waviness, and bow.
- Maximum allowable pattern deviation is 12 mm per meter.
- Designation System:
- Standardized product description includes type, standard reference, tint, pattern, nominal thickness, and dimensions.
Applications
SIST EN 572-5:2012 patterned glass is widely used in various building and architectural applications, including:
- Decorative facades and interior walls where patterned textures enhance aesthetics.
- Privacy panels in offices, bathrooms, and commercial spaces.
- Safety and design elements in doors and windows.
- Partitioning in retail and hospitality environments requiring both design and functional visual quality.
- Architectural features demanding reproducible high-quality patterned glass with consistent thickness and dimensional control.
This standard ensures that patterned glass meets strict quality criteria to maintain durability, appearance, and performance in all these usage scenarios.
Related Standards
- EN 572-1:2012 – Provides general definitions and mechanical properties for soda lime silicate glass products.
- EN 572-8 – Covers patterned glass in non-stock or final cut sizes, complementing the scope of EN 572-5.
- EN 572 series – The complete set of standards for basic soda lime silicate glass products, including parts on float glass (Part 2), polished wired glass (Part 3), drawn sheet glass (Part 4), wired patterned glass (Part 6), channel-shaped glass (Part 7), and conformity evaluation (Part 9).
These related standards create a comprehensive framework for specifying and evaluating soda lime silicate glass in building applications.
