Adhesives - Peel test for a flexible-bonded-to-rigid test specimen assembly - Part 2: 180 degree peel (ISO 8510-2:2006)

ISO 8510-2:2006 specifies a 180° peel test for the determination, under specified conditions, of the peel resistance of a bonded assembly of two adherends where one adherend is flexible and the other is rigid.

Lepila - Lupilni preskus spoja gibkega in togega lepljenca - 2. del: Luščenje pod kotom 180° (ISO 8510-2:2006)

Overview

EN ISO 8510-2:2010 (identical to ISO 8510-2:2006) defines a standardized 180° peel test to determine the peel resistance of a bonded assembly where one adherend is flexible and the other is rigid. The method is used to characterise adhesive performance under controlled conditions and to report reproducible peel force values for quality control, R&D and specification compliance.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Measures peel resistance for flexible-to-rigid bonded assemblies (180° peel). (A 90° peel variant is given in ISO 8510-1 for less flexible adherends.)
  • Apparatus: Tensile testing machine with constant grip-separation rate and force measurement accuracy within ±2%; grips to clamp the rigid adherend and a self-aligning grip for the flexible adherend.
  • Specimen geometry and materials:
    • Rigid adherend width: 25.0 mm ± 0.5 mm, minimum length 200 mm.
    • Recommended adherend thicknesses: metals 1.5 mm; plastics 1.5 mm; wood 3 mm; compounded rubbers 2 mm (other thicknesses by agreement).
    • Flexible adherend: bendable through 180° without gross irreversible change; recommended length ≥ 350 mm; width equal to rigid adherend or 5 mm wider at each edge for fraying-prone materials.
  • Preparation: Surface treatment per ISO 17212 or manufacturer instructions. Apply adhesive over full width to 150 mm length; pressing with up to 1 MPa recommended; measure adhesive thickness where practicable.
  • Conditioning and atmosphere: Use standard atmospheres from ISO 291.
  • Test procedure: Bend back the free end, clamp specimens, and apply a constant separation rate. Recommended rate 100 mm/min ± 10 mm/min. Record force vs. separation autographically and continue until at least 125 mm of bonded length has separated.
  • Results expression: For each specimen determine the average peel force (N) over at least 100 mm of peel length, excluding the first 25 mm; report maximum/minimum forces and arithmetic means across at least 5 specimens.
  • Reporting & precision: Include adhesive and adherend IDs, surface prep, test conditions, and failure mode (adhesive, cohesive, adherend). Inter-laboratory precision is not yet available (no precision statement).

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: adhesive manufacturers, materials test labs, automotive and aerospace engineers, manufacturers of tapes/laminates, quality control and R&D teams, and standards writers.
  • Practical uses: comparative performance testing, incoming quality control, product development (adhesive selection), contract acceptance testing, and forensic analysis of bonded joint failures.

Related standards

  • ISO 8510-1 - 90° peel test (alternative for less flexible adherends)
  • ISO 291 - Standard atmospheres for conditioning/testing
  • ISO 17212 - Surface preparation guidelines for bonding
  • ISO 5725 - Statistical treatment of precision and accuracy

ISO 8510-2:2006(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 8510-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee SC 11, Products.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 8510-2:1990), Clause 2 and Figure 1 of which
have been revised. In addition, minor editorial changes have been made in the text.
