Dentistry - Number coding system for rotary instruments - Part 7: Specific characteristics of mandrels and special instruments (ISO 6360-7:2006)
ISO 6360-7:2006 specifies the code numbers for specific characteristics of mandrels and special instruments such as bone cutters, implant burs, trephines, wax scrapers and polishers. This three-digit number forms the fourth group of three digits in the 15-digit overall number, the principles of which are explained in ISO 6360-1 and ISO 6360-2.

Overview
SIST EN ISO 6360-7:2006 is an international standard developed by ISO and endorsed by CEN that defines a number coding system for rotary dental instruments, specifically focusing on the specific characteristics of mandrels and special instruments. This standard forms Part 7 of the ISO 6360 series and helps dental professionals, manufacturers, and suppliers uniformly classify and identify a wide range of rotary instruments, such as bone cutters, implant burs, trephines, wax scrapers, and polishers.
This standard assigns a three-digit code representing these specific characteristics, which constitutes the fourth group of three digits within a 15-digit numerical classification system for rotary dental instruments. This system builds upon the general principles and other parts of ISO 6360 to promote consistency and clarity across the dental industry.
Key Topics
- Mandrels: Classified with a default code of
000for their specific characteristics, as no further differentiation is specified. - Special Instruments: This category includes bone cutters, implant burs, trephines, wax scrapers, and metallic polishers.
- Bone Cutters, Implant Burs, and Trephines: The three-digit code corresponds to the length of the working part, measured in 0.1 mm increments.
- Wax Cutters and Scrapers: No further specification is provided; these instruments are also designated with a
000code. - Metallic Polishers: Classified by the structure of the working surface, such as polisher types with or without grooves.
Coding System Structure
The 15-digit code for rotary instruments is divided into five groups of three digits:
- Materials of the working part
- Shanks and handles with overall length
- Shapes of instruments
- Specific characteristics (the focus of ISO 6360-7)
- Nominal diameter of the working part
The fourth group of three digits uniquely identifies specific characteristics per this part of the standard.
Applications
- Dental Instrument Manufacturers: Facilitate standardized product classification for rotary instruments, improving cataloging and inventory management.
- Dental Professionals and Clinics: Enable clear identification and ordering of precise rotary instruments by standardized codes, reducing errors and improving communication.
- Suppliers and Distributors: Streamline the supply chain by adopting a universal coding system for rotary dental instrument specifics.
- Regulatory Bodies: Utilize consistent classification to set safety and compliance guidelines for dental rotary instruments.
The standard encourages manufacturers and the dental trade to reference ISO 6360 series codes in product catalogs to ensure universal understanding and interoperability.
Related Standards
- ISO 6360-1: General characteristics of rotary instruments, foundational principles of the coding system.
- ISO 6360-2: Defines shape codes of rotary instruments, forming the third group of digits in the code.
- ISO 6360-3 to ISO 6360-6: Further parts of the series addressing specific characteristics of burs, cutters, diamond instruments, and abrasive instruments.
- ISO 6360-5 (in preparation): Will cover root-canal instruments, expanding the coding system’s scope.
By integrating SIST EN ISO 6360-7:2006 with these companion standards, users achieve a comprehensive, detailed classification system covering virtually all rotary dental instruments.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 6360-7 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 106, Dentistry, Subcommittee SC 4, Dental
instruments.
