Overview
SIST EN 16910:2018 defines the essential requirements for non-destructive testing (NDT) of wheelsets during railway maintenance activities. This European standard supports safety, reliability, and traceability by ensuring wheelsets-critical components of rolling stock running gear-are inspected with effective NDT methods. The standard addresses NDT processes for both in-service and off-vehicle maintenance, guidelines for qualifying NDT personnel, documentation standards for procedures and instructions, and the traceability of maintenance results. It also provides guidance for the introduction of new NDT techniques and specifies the use of ultrasonic testing (UT), magnetic particle testing (MT), and eddy current testing (ET) as the recognized NDT methods for wheelsets within its scope.
Key Topics
Scope of NDT Application
- Addresses maintenance-related NDT for wheelsets only (not for new manufacturing quality).
- Covers both routine, in-service checks and deeper off-vehicle inspection.
Recognized NDT Methods
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Magnetic Particle Testing (MT)
- Eddy Current Testing (ET)
NDT Personnel Requirements
- Specifies competence levels for NDT staff (Levels 1, 2, and 3).
- Details training, experience, examination, and authorization process.
- Emphasizes continuous validation and periodic technical evaluations.
NDT Documentation
- Outlines requirements for preparing NDT procedures and instructions.
- Stipulates validation and approval by qualified personnel.
- Calls for thorough reporting and equipment records to ensure traceability.
Defect Detection & Guidance
- Provides a catalogue of common defects found in wheelsets.
- References examples of typical NDT indications for guidance.
Introduction of New Techniques
- Offers structure for assessing and adopting new NDT methods within wheelset maintenance practice.
Applications
The SIST EN 16910:2018 standard is crucial for railway operators, rolling stock maintenance providers, and NDT service organizations. Key applications include:
- Routine Wheelset Inspection: Ensuring continued safe operation of railway vehicles by detecting fatigue cracks, subsurface flaws, and surface damage before they pose a risk.
- Maintenance Traceability: Documenting inspection results and equipment usage, supporting regulatory compliance and facilitating root cause analysis.
- Personnel Qualification Programs: Establishing and maintaining a competent workforce for NDT of wheelsets, especially important for consistent quality and safety across European rail networks.
- Adoption of Technological Advancements: Providing guidance on integrating new, validated NDT technologies in maintenance practice, increasing efficiency and defect detection capabilities.
By adhering to SIST EN 16910:2018, rail organizations can optimize maintenance schedules, minimize out-of-service time, and comply with Europe-wide safety and interoperability directives.
