Portable multimedia equipment - Determination of battery duration - Part 3: Wearable powered loudspeaker equipment (IEC 63296-3:2025)
IEC 63296-3:2025 specifies the method for measuring the battery duration at a defined sound pressure level for continuous music playback of battery-operated wearable powered loudspeaker equipment. A primary battery or secondary battery can be used as a power source for such a shoulder-carried or body-worn loudspeaker and its composite device. In addition, only equipment that can be placed on or hung from a head and torso simulator (HATS) is covered. Bone conduction speakers are excluded. Portable loudspeaker equipment also supporting video playback as the main function is not covered by this document.

Overview
EN IEC 63296-3:2025 - Portable multimedia equipment - Determination of battery duration - Part 3: Wearable powered loudspeaker equipment specifies a standardized method to measure battery duration for battery-operated, wearable loudspeakers (for example, neckband or shoulder‑carried speakers) during continuous music playback. The method measures operating time at a defined sound pressure level (SPL) with the equipment placed on or hung from a head and torso simulator (HATS). Both primary and secondary batteries are covered. Note: bone‑conduction speakers and devices whose main function is video playback are excluded.
Key Topics
- Scope and applicability
- Measurement for wearable powered loudspeakers that can be attached to a HATS.
- Excludes bone conduction and mainly video devices.
- Measurement conditions
- Environmental and acoustical conditions, background noise and measurement accuracy requirements.
- Specified use of HATS, pinna/ear simulators and free‑field compensation.
- Input and signal requirements
- Defined test signals for continuous music playback; radio broadcast and other digital inputs are addressed.
- Instrumentation
- Use of 1/3‑octave analyzers, voltmeters, A‑weighting filters and free‑field compensating filters to determine reproduced SPL and monitor performance.
- Test procedure
- Setup of Equipment Under Test (EUT) on HATS, operating and output conditions, control adjustments, and the stepwise measurement of battery duration.
- Reporting
- Characteristics to be specified and example reporting formats (informative annexes provide examples).
Applications and Who Uses It
- Manufacturers of wearable powered loudspeakers (neckband, shoulder speakers) use this standard to specify and verify claimed battery life under consistent acoustic conditions.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies apply the method for product verification, compliance testing and energy/eco‑labelling.
- Product designers and QA teams adopt the method during development to compare battery chemistries, amplifier settings or acoustic designs at a fixed SPL.
- Regulators and procurement professionals can reference the standard for consistent battery‑duration claims in specifications and tenders.
Practical value: provides reproducible, comparable battery duration results tied to an objective acoustic level (SPL) and standardized human‑coupling (HATS), improving transparency of battery‑life claims for wearable audio products.

56 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
57 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
58 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
59 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
60 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
61 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
62 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
63 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
64 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
65 interested IEC National Committees.

72 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
73 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
74 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
75 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
76 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
