Overview

EN 50632-2-19:2016/A1:2021 is a CENELEC amendment that defines particular requirements for measuring dust emissions from jointers (motor-operated planing tools). It is part of the EN 50632 series covering dust measurement procedures for electric motor-operated tools. The standard applies to tools supplied from mains or batteries, with or without dust extraction, where mineral dust (including silica) or wood dust is expected. Amendment A1 (2021) updates operating conditions and adds a test orientation figure; this Part 2 is to be used in conjunction with EN 50632-1:2015.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Dust measurement procedure specific to jointers; applicable to mains- and battery-powered tools, both with and without extraction units.
  • Test material & set-up:
    • Chipboard: P2 in accordance with EN 312; density (610 ± 60) kg/m³; thickness (19 ± 1) mm; width (400 ± 2) mm.
    • Workpiece mounted horizontally at a defined height relative to dust samplers (see 4.2).
    • Grooves cut across the 400 mm width.
  • Tool and cutting parameters:
    • Disc cutter specified for chipboard, 4 mm thickness; a new cutter is used at the start of each of three tests.
    • Cutting depth: 12 mm.
    • Feed force: sufficient to ensure stable operation and good performance (operator-applied).
  • Test cycle:
    • One test cycle performs 15 grooves distributed over the working time.
    • Typical guidance: 15 grooves in 10 minutes requires ~0.75 m/min working speed; time may be extended to achieve required grooves.
  • Operator and orientation:
    • Operator position and test layout defined by newly added Figure 101 (right-handed setup; mirror for left-handed tools).
  • Regulatory timing:
    • Amendment approved 2021-08-09; national implementation and withdrawal dates are specified in the foreword.

Applications - who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of jointers and woodworking power tools - to design, verify and claim dust emission performance.
  • Independent test laboratories - to conduct repeatable, standardized dust emission measurements.
  • Safety and compliance engineers - for conformity assessment against EU/ national requirements and to support CE marking documentation.
  • Procurement and facility managers - to compare tools for workplace exposure control and dust extraction needs.
  • Occupational health professionals - for exposure assessment and control measures for silica and wood dust.
