oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025 is a CEN draft European Standard for the execution of steel structures and aluminium structures, focused on cold-formed structural steel elements and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications. It specifies requirements for manufacture, installation, documentation, tolerances, fastening, welding, surface protection, inspection and deconstruction, mainly for manufacturers, installers, designers and quality staff working with these products.
What does oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025 specify?
oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025 specifies the execution of cold-formed structural steel members, profiled sheeting and cold-formed structures used in roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications. It is written for structures designed to the EN 1993 series, especially EN 1993-1-3 and EN 1993-1-4, and it can also be used with other design rules when their execution conditions are met.
The scope includes manufacture and installation under predominantly static or seismic loading, together with the related documentation. It also covers deconstruction of these structures, so the standard supports the full life cycle on site, not only initial fabrication.
The document does not cover composite structural members where dissimilar materials are part of the structural behaviour, such as sandwich panels and composite floors. It also leaves out thermal insulation, moisture protection, noise control, fire protection detailing, traditional plumber or tinsmith cladding work, and detailed water tightness, air permeability and thermal requirements for profiled sheeting.
The standard is organized into clauses on specification and documentation, products, manufacturing, welding, mechanical fastening, installation, surface protection, geometrical tolerances, inspection and testing, and deconstruction. Its annexes provide design, tolerance, corrosion-protection and record-keeping details.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Basic requirements for profiled sheeting, including support conditions, edges, building physics and roof drainage |
| Annex B | Additional design requirements for profiled sheeting, including serviceability, support widths, cantilevers and effective load width |
| Annex C | Installation records |
| Annex D | Geometrical tolerances for profiled sheeting, members and punched holes |
| Annex E | Corrosion protection by metallic coating, with or without organic coatings, and the related suitability tests |
| Annex F | Additional information that shall be specified when the standard calls for it |
What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025?
oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025 ties execution to a controlled specification, traceable materials, suitable fabrication methods and documented inspection. In practice, that means the manufacturer and installer must define how the work will be done, prove what was installed, and control nonconforming products before they reach the structure.
Specification, records and traceability
Clause 4 requires an execution specification from the manufacturer and an installation specification from the installer. It also requires layout drawings, defined geometrical tolerances, installation quality documentation and installation records, with a completion statement signed at the end of the work.
For the reader, this means the job should not start without agreed instructions, drawing information and acceptance criteria. The same clause requires traceability of cold-formed steel members and profiled sheeting from material purchase through production and installation, so batch identification and records matter on site and in the factory.
Products, materials and identification
Clause 5 requires materials to be suitable for cold forming and to comply with the material provisions in the standard. For steel products, inspection documents are part of the control system, and products need identification and labelling that support traceability and comparison with the specified properties.
This matters because the standard treats materials without the required documentation as nonconforming until compliance is demonstrated. Clause 5 also states that accessories needed for function, such as trims, sealant strips, fillers and flashings, must meet the same durability, corrosion protection and reaction-to-fire expectations unless otherwise specified.
Manufacturing and welding
Clause 6 requires cold forming by roll forming or press braking and forbids hammering. It also requires that bends do not show visible cracking and that stainless steel forming equipment be cleaned when the same equipment is used for other steels.
For a fabricator, this means process control is part of product quality, not just final inspection. Clause 7 adds welding rules: general welding provisions come from EN 1090-2, while the longitudinal seam of cold-formed closed and hollow sections needs a welding procedure specification based on a pre-production test, with specified inspection and destructive testing before production and during production.
Mechanical fastening
Clause 8 covers screws, blind rivets and cartridge fired pins for shop and site fastening. Fasteners must follow the installation specification and the fastener manufacturer’s instructions, and procedure tests may be used to prove that the connection can be made correctly in site conditions.
The practical message is that fastening is not only a product choice but also a workmanship issue. The standard requires attention to screw length, torque or depth control, washer compression, rivet length, pin selection and the spacing and edge distances for sidelaps and attachments, and it requires swarf and broken mandrels to be removed to avoid later corrosion.
Installation, inspection and acceptance
Clause 9 sets the site rules. Installation only starts when site conditions are suitable, trained and experienced personnel are available, the preceding works have been checked, tools are correct, and safety devices and fall protection are in place.
This clause also governs storage, unloading, lifting, laying, direction of lay, maintaining cover width and cleaning after installation. Damaged members or sheeting may only stay in place if load-bearing capacity, serviceability and durability are still adequate, and diaphragms have to be identified and communicated clearly because later alterations can affect the stability of the whole building.
Clause 12 requires inspection and testing to follow a predetermined plan, with documented procedures and correction of nonconforming products. Clause 13 extends the same safety mindset to deconstruction, which has to be planned, controlled and documented.
Surface protection, tolerances and special cases
Clause 10 and Annex E govern corrosion protection, including metallic coatings, organic coatings and the suitability checks for corrosivity categories. Clause 11 and Annex D set essential and functional geometrical tolerances, which helps ensure both structural performance and fit-up on site.
Annex A and Annex B add design conditions for profiled sheeting, including support widths, drainage, water ponding, walkability and cantilevers. Annex A also links roof detailing to roof pitch and overlapping, which matters for avoiding water ingress and for deciding where special sealing measures are needed.
What terms does oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025 define?
- component I - the part of a connection, usually the profiled sheeting, that faces the head of the fastener or the swage head in the case of blind rivets.
- component II - the second part of a connection, usually the supporting member.
- decking - load-bearing profiled sheeting intended to support insulation and an outer skin.
- fastening - the fastener, the fastening process and the final connected components taken together.
- layout drawing - a drawing showing the position of structural components and installation details.
- liner tray - a profiled sheet with a large lipped edge stiffener that can interlock with adjacent trays to form a ribbed plane able to support a parallel plane of profiled sheeting.
- member - a linear profiled cross section, with cross-sectional dimensions much smaller than its length.
- essential tolerance - a geometrical limit needed to satisfy the design assumptions for mechanical resistance and stability.
- functional tolerance - a geometrical tolerance needed for functions such as appearance or fit-up.
- structural cold-formed component - a load-bearing element made from steel sheet by cold rolling or press braking.
Who uses oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025?

1 Scope
This document specifies requirements for the execution, i.e. the manufacture and the installation, of cold-
formed structural steel members and profiled sheeting and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor,
wall and cladding applications.
This document applies to structures designed according to the EN 1993 series.
This document applies to structural members and profiled sheeting designed according to EN 1993-1-3.
This document can be used for structures designed according to other design rules provided that
conditions for execution comply with them and any necessary additional requirements are specified.
This document also specifies requirements for the execution i.e. the manufacture and the installation of
structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications under
predominately static loading or seismic loading conditions and their documentation.
This document covers structural profiled sheeting of Structural Class I and II and structural profiled
sheeting in Structural Class III according to EN 1993-1-3 used in structures.
NOTE 1 In National Annexes of EN 1993-1-3 specifications can be given regarding the use of the Structural
Classes.
This document covers structural members of all structural classes according to EN 1993-1-3.
Structural profiled sheeting is understood here to be:
— profiled sheet, such as trapezoidal, sinusoidal or liner trays (Figure 1).
Structural members are understood here to be:
— members (linear profiled cross sections) that are produced by cold forming (Figure 2).
This document also covers:
— not welded built-up sections (Figure 2d);
— cold-formed closed and hollow sections including the welding of the longitudinal seam (Figure 2b and
Figure 2c), not covered by EN 10219-1;
— perforated, punctured and micro profiled sheeting and members;
The welding of built-up sections are not covered. The welding provisions are given in EN 1090-2.
This document also covers spacer constructions between the outer and inner or upper and lower skins
for roofs, walls and ceilings made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and the connections and
attachments of the afore mentioned elements as long as all has a structural purpose.
This document covers steel profiled sheeting for composite floors, e.g. during installation and in stage of
pouring concrete.
This document also covers the deconstruction of structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and
structural members for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications.
Composite structural members where the interaction between dissimilar materials are an integral part
of the structural behaviour such as sandwich panels and composite floors are not covered by this
document.
This document does not cover the necessary analyses and detailing and execution rules for thermal
insulation, moisture protection, noise control and fire protection.
prEN 1090-4:2025 (E)
This document does not cover regulations of roof cladding and wall cladding, produced by traditional
plumber methods or tinsmith methods.
This document does not cover detailed requirements for water tightness or air permeability resistance
and thermal aspects of profiled sheeting.
NOTE 2 The structures covered in this document can be for example.
— single- or multi-skin roofs, whereby the load-bearing structure (lower skin) or the actual roof covering (upper
skin) or both consist of cold-formed structural members and profiled sheeting;
— single- or multi-skin walls whereby the load-bearing structure (inner skin), the actual cladding (outer skin) or
both consist of cold-formed structural members and profiled sheeting, or
— trusses from cold-formed members.
NOTE 3 Structures can consist of an assembly of structural members and profiled sheeting made of steel
according to EN 1090-4 and of aluminium according to EN 1090-5.
