SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003 is the Slovenian identical adoption of ETSI EN 301 790 Version 1.2.2, Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB); Interaction channel for satellite distribution systems. It specifies the return channel for GEO satellite interactive networks: how a Return Channel Satellite Terminal (RCST) synchronizes, sends bursts, requests capacity, and exchanges control messages with the network. It is intended for RCSTs, network control centres, gateways, and related equipment that carry user traffic and signalling over the satellite return link.

What does SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003 specify?

SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003 specifies the interaction channel for GEO satellite interactive networks with fixed return channel satellite terminals (RCST). It also covers the forward-link signalling that lets the network organize return-link access and keep terminals synchronized.

The standard is organized into clauses 4 to 9, with Annex A as an informative compliance table.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ACompliance table

Clause 4 sets out reference models for the satellite interactive network. Clause 5 covers the forward link, clause 6 the return-link base-band physical layer and multiple access, clause 7 synchronization procedures, clause 8 control and management, and clause 9 security, identity and encryption.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003?

SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003 defines both the signalling architecture and the physical behaviour of the return link. In practice, this means an RCST must be able to lock to the network clock, transmit only in assigned slots, and use the signalling tables and messages defined by the network.

Reference model and protocol stack

Clause 4 defines the broadcast channel, interaction channel, return interaction path and forward interaction path. Clause 8 then maps the protocol stack, with IP-only operation for RCST Type A and optional native ATM support for RCST Type B. For implementers, this tells you whether the terminal is meant for IP carriage only or also for ATM-based services.

Burst formats, coding and modulation

Clause 6 defines four burst types: TRF, ACQ, SYNC and CSC. It specifies randomization, CRC, Reed-Solomon coding, convolutional coding, Turbo code, and QPSK modulation with square-root raised cosine shaping. In practice, equipment must generate the correct burst type, coding chain and modulation for the service mode it supports.

Multiple access and capacity requests

Clause 6 uses MF-TDMA with fixed or optional dynamic slot allocation. It also defines the capacity categories CRA, RBDC, VBDC, AVBDC and FCA. This matters because the terminal and network must agree on how bandwidth is requested, granted and updated from one superframe to the next.

Synchronization, logon and logoff

Clause 7 describes initial synchronization, logon, optional coarse and fine synchronization, maintenance, and logoff. The RCST uses forward-link information such as NCR, SCT, FCT, TCT, SPT and TBTP to align frequency, timing and burst position. In practice, a terminal cannot send traffic bursts until it reaches FineSync state.

Control, management and addressing

Clause 8 defines how the network addresses RCSTs by MAC address and by logical Group_ID and Logon_ID. It also defines the forward-link signalling tables and the RCST-specific TIM, plus optional SNMP-based configuration and management exchange. This is the part that engineers use to plan provisioning, identify terminals, and manage network control.

Security

Clause 9 defines authentication, forward-link and return-link security, and optional cryptographic procedures such as Main Key Exchange, Quick Key Exchange and Explicit Key Exchange. It also defines security MAC messages for sign-on, key exchange and waiting states. For deployment, this is the section that governs protected access and encrypted operation when security is enabled.

What terms does SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003 define?

  • RCST - Return Channel Satellite Terminal, the terminal that receives the forward link and transmits the return link.
  • NCC - Network Control Centre, the entity that manages timing, control and network signalling.
  • TBTP - Terminal Burst Time Plan, the schedule that tells terminals when and where to transmit.
  • TIM - Terminal Information Message, the forward-link message used to send terminal-specific or broadcast control information.
  • CMT - Correction Message Table, the message that returns burst timing, frequency and power corrections.
  • SCT - Superframe Composition Table, the table that defines superframes and frames in the return link.
  • FCT - Frame Composition Table, the table that partitions frames into time-slots.
  • TCT - Time-Slot Composition Table, the table that defines the transmission parameters for each time-slot type.

Who uses SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003?

SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003 is used by satellite network operators, gateway and feeder-station engineers, RCST manufacturers, terminal integrators, and installers. It is also relevant to quality managers and buyers who need to check whether a terminal or network element can join and operate in a DVB satellite interactive network.

The scope explicitly includes RCSTs for individual or collective installation, such as SMATV, and for connection to in-house data networks. That makes the standard relevant to domestic and professional satellite interactive deployments.

What does the SIST EN 301 790 V1.2.2:2003 document contain?

The standard contains reference models, burst definitions, coding and modulation rules, MAC message formats, synchronization procedures, and control and management signalling. It also gives the syntax and semantics of the SI tables and DSM-CC private sections used on the forward link.

It includes detailed table definitions for SCT, FCT, TCT, SPT, TBTP, TIM and CMT, plus descriptor definitions for logon, assignment, correction, contention control and security-related functions. It also provides figures for the protocol stack, burst composition and synchronization flow, which are the basis for implementation and testing.

Annex A provides a compliance table for checking conformance to the standard.
