Overview
SIST ISO 701:2000, titled International gear notation - Symbols for geometrical data, is an international standard developed by ISO/TC 60 (Gears) subcommittee SC 1, which focuses on nomenclature and worm gears. This second edition updates the original 1976 standard and provides a unified system of symbols for representing the key geometrical data of gears. The standard promotes a consistent international language for gear geometry notation to ensure clear communication and reduce misunderstandings across technical documents and industries.
By specifying standard symbols and indices, ISO 701 facilitates the exchange of technical gear design information worldwide. This standard is essential for manufacturers, engineers, and technical professionals working with gear systems, improving clarity in documentation and enhancing collaboration on a global scale.
Key Topics
Symbol System for Geometrical Data: ISO 701 defines primary symbols comprising single Latin or Greek letters (capital or lowercase, italicized), which represent fundamental gear geometrical parameters such as module, number of teeth, pitch diameter, and pressure angle.
Indices and Modifiers: The standard introduces indices to refine the main symbols, indicating specific characteristics like position (head, base), type (actual, maximum, minimum), and reference elements (pinion, gear). Numeric indices (e.g., 0 for tool, 1 for pinion) help specify particular gear components.
Notation Rules: Symbols consist of a primary letter followed by indices written on a single line beneath it. The standard avoids complicated features such as barred notations, superscripts other than powers, and multi-level indices to maintain simplicity.
Order of Indices: An established order for multiple indices ensures uniformity and avoids ambiguity when several qualifiers apply to a symbol concurrently.
Examples: The standard provides clear examples like "m" for module, "d₁" for pitch diameter of the pinion, or "R₂w" for the length of the generatrix of a gear cone, illustrating practical use of the notation system.
Applications
Gear Design and Manufacturing: ISO 701 supports standardized documentation of gear geometrical data in design drawings, specification sheets, and technical reports, improving clarity and reducing errors during production.
Technical Communication: Enables engineers, designers, and quality control specialists across different countries and companies to understand and interpret gear data without confusion.
Educational Resources: Valuable for training mechanical engineers and students by providing a consistent language for gear geometry, essential for learning gear principles and advanced design.
Software and CAD Integration: The notation system can be implemented inside gear design software and computer-aided design (CAD) tools to maintain uniform labeling and parameter definitions.
Standardization in International Trade: Helps harmonize specifications in global supply chains, improving compatibility and interoperability of gear components manufactured by different suppliers.
Related Standards
ISO 1122-1:1998 - Vocabulary of Gears - Part 1: Geometrical Definitions: ISO 701 symbols correspond to terms defined in ISO 1122-1, ensuring consistency between terminology and notation.
ISO/TC 60 Series: Other ISO standards related to gear design, testing, and quality assurance complement the geometrical notation by addressing manufacturing processes and performance criteria.
Technical Drawing Standards: Standards such as ISO 128 (technical drawings - general principles) and ISO 129 (dimensioning) use such standardized symbols to communicate gear dimensions effectively.
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Standards: Collaboration between ISO and IEC ensures integration with electromechanical components involving gears, facilitating cross-disciplinary standard use.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a wordwide
federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of
preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which
a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented
on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-
governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.

ISO ISO 701:1998(E)
Introduction
The symbols in this International Standard are defined for use in relation to
the principal geometrical terms defined in ISO 1122-1:1998, Vocabulary of
gear terms — Part 1: Definitions related to geometry.
Consequently, it is important:
— that these symbols be used in national standards and, where
appropriate, in other national documents in order to facilitate the
understanding of documents which are exchanged between countries;
— to use for geometrical data only those combinations of letters which
are given in the tables of this International Standard, in order to avoid
any risk of confusion with symbols relating to other gear data, which
may be determined later.

Introduction
d'assurer un véritable langage international de notations facilitant les échanges de documents d'un pays à l'autre;

Uvod
bi olajšali razumevanje med uporabniki različnih držav;
preglednice 2,3 in 4).
2 Simboli
2.1 Izpeljava simbolov geometrijskih veličin
Osnovna pravila:
lahko pa tudi nadpisanih indeksov;
abecede v kurzivni pisavi;
vsebuje več kot en numerični indeks;
d) vsi podpisani indeksi naj bodo pisani na isti črti, toda pod črto osnovnih simbolov;
e) izogibati se je treba obkroženih (uokvirjenih) označb (nadpisanih in podpisanih), nadpisanih
označb, razen eksponentov, podpisanih in nadpisanih predpon, podpisanih in nadpisanih označb
v drugem redu in vejic.
2.2 Osnovni simboli geometrijskih veličin
Najpogosteje uporabljani simboli geometrijskih veličin so našteti v preglednici 1.
2.3 Osnovni indeksi
uporabljani indeksi so našteti v pregledni
