Overview
kSIST FprEN 16820:2025 is a European standard developed by CEN/TC 218, focused on rubber and plastics hoses and hose assemblies designed specifically for pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries. This standard covers bonded elastomeric hoses, with or without linings, that are intended for the safe and efficient transport of gaseous, vaporous, liquid, or powdery substances within these highly regulated sectors.
Applicable to hose types D and SD, kSIST FprEN 16820:2025 outlines the classification, material requirements, manufacturing processes, testing protocols, and quality surveillance measures necessary to ensure hose assemblies meet stringent operational and safety requirements. It supports temperatures ranging from −30 °C to +100 °C (and up to +140 °C for PTFE-lined hoses), and pressures from vacuum (−0.9 bar) up to 10 bar.
Key Topics
Hose Types and Classifications
The standard categorizes hoses into four main assembly types:- Type A–D and A–SD (rubber hose with or without plastic lining, conforming fully with pharmaceutical industry requirements)
- Type B–D and B–SD (rubber hose with or without plastic lining, conforming only the lining in contact with the product)
Material Standards and Requirements
Materials must comply with pharmaceutical and biotechnological industry regulations, ensuring product safety and hygiene. Among the linings, PTFE and its derivatives are permitted to withstand higher temperatures.Pressure and Temperature Ranges
Operating parameters specify safe use from vacuum to 10 bar pressure, and temperature ranges from -30 °C to +100 °C or +140 °C for PTFE linings. Custom operating conditions can be agreed upon between manufacturers and users.Hose Grades for Electrical Properties
Five electrical grades are defined based on static dissipation or electrical bonding requirements:- Grade I: Electrically insulated
- Grade M: Electrically bonded, non-static dissipative
- Grade Ω: Electrically conductive
- Grade M/T: Electrically bonded with volume resistance ≤10⁹ Ω
- Grade Ω/T: Electrically conductive with volume resistance ≤10⁹ Ω
Testing and Quality Control
The standard specifies comprehensive physical, electrical, and safety tests including hydrostatic pressure, vacuum resistance, crushing strength (for SD type hoses), fire behaviour, and adhesion. Autoclavability at 130 °C for 30 minutes is mandatory for sterilization compatibility.Dimensional Specifications
Detailed inside/outside diameters, lining thicknesses, minimum bending radii, and tolerances are provided to ensure proper hose performance and installation compatibility.
Applications
kSIST FprEN 16820:2025 hoses and hose assemblies are essential components for:
Pharmaceutical Manufacturing
Transferring sterile liquids, gases, and powders with strict hygiene standards and resistance to sterilization processes.Biotechnological Processes
Handling highly sensitive bio-substances safely, preventing contamination, and accommodating exacting material compatibility requirements.Sterile Environments
Use in cleanrooms or controlled production areas where materials must withstand autoclaving and maintain functional integrity.Chemical Transport Within Pharma/Biotech
Safe conveyance of chemicals, solvents, or reagents used in drug production or biotechnological synthesis.
These hose assemblies support efficient, safe, and reliable operations where regulatory compliance and product purity are critical.
Related Standards
kSIST FprEN 16820:2025 references and aligns with several international and European norms relevant to hose technology and pharmaceutical applications, including:
- EN ISO 1402:2021 – Hydrostatic testing of rubber and plastics hoses
- EN ISO 8031:2020 – Electrical resistance and conductivity testing for hoses

The dimensions for the minimum thickness of the lining are not applicable for hoses made of PE-X/UPE and fluoro-plastics.
The thickness of these materials shall be at least 0,4 mm.
b
The bending radii given are not applicable for hoses made of PE-X/UPE and fluoro-plastics; in these cases they shall be
1,5 times as large.
5.2 Concentricity
When determined in accordance with EN ISO 4671 on the basis of all readings of the dial gauge between
the inside diameter and the surface of the cover, the concentricity shall be ≤ 1,0 mm for hoses with a
nominal size ≤ 50 and ≤ 1,5 mm for hoses with a nominal size > 50.
5.3 Length and tolerances for the hose assemblies
The length of the hose assembly is considered to be the installation length measured between the sealing
surfaces of the end fittings.
+15
The permissible tolerance is mm for hose assemblies with a length of up to and including 1 000 mm.
−10
+15,
The permissible tolerance is % for hose assemblies with a length of more than 1 000 mm.
−1,0
5.4 Minimum bending radius
The dimensions given in Table 2 and Table 3 apply to the minimum bending radius
