Petroleum and related products - Determination of the flammability characteristics of fluids in contact with hot surfaces - Manifold ignition test (ISO 20823:2003)
ISO 20823:2003 specifies a test method to determine the relative flammability of fluids when contacted with a hot metal surface at a fixed temperature, but it is also possible to gauge fluid ignition temperatures by adjustment of the manifold temperature.
It is primarily used is to assess the resistance to ignition of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids which are, by definition, difficult to ignite.
It may be used with other types of more flammable fluids at lower surface temperatures, but this could significantly increase the hazards of this procedure.
ANMERKUNG Dieses Prüfverfahren ist in ISO 12922:1999, Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) - Family H (Hydraulic systems) - Specifications for categories HFAE, HFAS, HFB, HFC, HFDR and HFDU als Prüfung der Schwerentflammbarkeit vorgeschrieben

Overview
EN ISO 20823:2003 (ISO 20823:2003) defines the manifold ignition test for determining the flammability characteristics of petroleum-related fluids when they contact hot metal surfaces. The method measures relative resistance to ignition - primarily for fire‑resistant hydraulic fluids - by dispensing a controlled test portion onto a heated simulated manifold and observing flash or sustained burning. The procedure can also be used to gauge ignition temperatures by changing the manifold temperature, but doing so for more flammable fluids increases hazard.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test principle: A 10 ml test portion is dispensed onto a heated tube and the spray is observed for flash or burning on the tube and in the drip tray.
- Standard test temperature: Manifold surface nominally at 700 °C ± 5 °C (other temperatures may be used to determine ignition points).
- Dispensing: 10 ml ± 0.5 ml delivered at a controlled rate so the portion is expelled in 40–60 s from a dispenser mounted 300 mm above the tube (height recorded to nearest 5 mm).
- Apparatus: Simulated manifold (corrosion‑resistant steel tube ~75 mm OD, sandblasted), internal heater, temperature sensors in contact with the tube, ventilated fire‑resistant enclosure, and a drip tray.
- Preparation and safety: Tube cleaning with steel wool and solvent; samples mixed per ISO 3170 sampling guidance. The standard includes a clear safety warning - testing may involve hazardous materials and operations; appropriate ventilation and safety controls are required.
- Result categories:
- I(T) - flashes or burns on the tube only (does not continue burning in tray)
- I(D) - flashes/burns and continues to burn in the tray
- N - no flash or burn (may be reported as “pass”)
- Repeatability: Three tests at different positions (≥50 mm apart) on the same cleaned tube; laboratories should implement internal quality‑control procedures because conventional precision statistics are not specified.
Applications and users
- Practical use: Assessing ignition resistance of fire‑resistant hydraulic fluids, supporting product development, safety assessments, material selection and regulatory compliance where hot‑surface ignition risk is a concern.
- Who uses it:
- Third‑party test laboratories and certification bodies
- Hydraulic fluid manufacturers and R&D teams
- Safety and reliability engineers in industrial, aerospace, and marine sectors
- Procurement and quality managers specifying fluids for equipment exposed to hot surfaces
- Caution: Use with more flammable fluids is possible at lower manifold temperatures but significantly increases hazard and requires extra controls.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 20823 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 28, Petroleum products and lubricants.
