Heating boilers - Part 6: Heating boilers with forced draught burners - Specific requirements for the domestic hot water operation and energy performance of water heaters and combination boilers with atomizing oil burners of nominal heat input not exceeding 70 kW

This document is composed of two parts.
The first part supplements EN 303-1, EN 303-2, EN 303-4 and EN 304, hereafter called boiler standards. It specifies the supplementary requirements and tests for the construction, safety, rational use of energy, fitness for purpose, classification and marking related to the domestic hot water operation of oil-fired water heaters and combination boilers.
The domestic hot water is produced on either the instantaneous or storage principle. The domestic hot water production is integrated or coupled, the whole being marketed as a single unit.
The second part covers the energy performance of domestic hot water production of the appliances covered by the first part.
This second part sets out a method for assessing the energy performance of the appliances. It defines a number of daily tapping cycles for each domestic hot water use such as kitchen, shower, bath and a combination of these, together with corresponding test procedures, enabling the energy performances of combination boilers and water heaters to be compared and matched to the needs of the user.
The heat output of the appliances covered by this standard does not exceed 400 kW.
In the case of combination boilers, with or without storage tank, domestic hot water production is integrated or coupled, the whole being marketed as a single unit.
This standard only covers type testing.

Overview

EN 303-6:2019/prA1 (CEN) specifies requirements and test methods for oil‑fired water heaters and combination boilers with forced‑draught (blower) atomizing oil burners. The standard is issued in two parts:

  • Part 1 supplements EN 303‑1, EN 303‑2, EN 303‑4 and EN 304 with construction, safety, energy‑use, fitness‑for‑purpose, classification and marking requirements specific to domestic hot water (DHW) operation of oil‑fired water heaters and combination boilers (instantaneous or storage; integrated or coupled marketed as a single unit).
  • Part 2 defines a method for assessing energy performance of DHW production, including daily tapping cycles (kitchen, shower, bath and combinations) and associated test procedures so products can be compared and matched to user needs.

Scope notes:

  • The base standard covers appliances up to 400 kW heat output; the prA1 draft amendment addresses appliances with nominal heat input not exceeding 70 kW.
  • This EN applies to type testing only and was prepared by CEN/TC 57.

Key topics and requirements

  • Domestic hot water performance: Criteria for instantaneous and storage DHW production, integrated or coupled configurations.
  • Energy performance assessment: Defined tapping cycles and test procedures to determine water‑heating efficiency, annual fuel/electricity consumption (AFC/AEC) and comparable performance metrics.
  • Auxiliary energy accounting: Rules for measuring and correcting electrical auxiliary consumption (standby, off mode) and conversion coefficients (e.g., CC = 2.5 for electricity‑to‑fuel equivalence) used in energy efficiency calculations.
  • Tank losses and temperature measurement: Procedures and formulae for determining tank losses, mean water temperature and cooling periods.
  • Marking and classification: Requirements to support energy labelling and ecodesign conformity claims.
  • Regulatory linkage: Informative annexes (ZA–ZD) map the standard to EU ecodesign and energy labelling Regulations (e.g., Regs. 814/2013, 812/2013, 813/2013, 811/2013), enabling presumption of conformity when cited in the Official Journal.

Practical applications and users

This standard is essential for:

  • Manufacturers designing and type‑testing oil‑fired water heaters and combination boilers to demonstrate DHW performance and regulatory compliance.
  • Test laboratories performing standardized tapping cycle tests, efficiency measurements and auxiliary energy assessments.
  • Regulatory bodies and market surveillance authorities evaluating ecodesign and energy‑labelling claims.
  • Specifiers, energy consultants and procurement teams comparing products (combination boilers vs water heaters) based on standardized performance metrics.
  • R&D and product development teams optimizing DHW efficiency, storage losses and ancillary controls.

Related standards

  • EN 303‑1, EN 303‑2, EN 303‑4, EN 304 (referenced “boiler standards” that EN 303‑6 supplements)
  • EU ecodesign and energy labelling regulations referenced in Annexes ZA–ZD
