Lead-acid traction batteries -- Part 2: Dimensions of cells and terminals and marking of polarity on cells

This part of IEC 60254 is applicable to lead-acid traction batteries used as power sources for electric propulsion. The object of the present standard is to specify:  - the maximum external (overall) dimensions of traction battery cells, that is, the width, the height and the length;  - the form of the marking of traction battery cell polarity and dimensions of corresponding symbols;  - the basic dimensions of some commonly used traction battery terminals designed to connect output cables to the battery;  - the dimensions of cells commonly used in Asia and North America.  This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 1997 and its Amendment 1 (2000). It constitutes a technical revision. The main modification concerns the introduction of new dimensions.

Overview

EN 60254-2:2008 (IEC 60254-2:2008) is the CLC/CENELEC adoption of the international standard for lead‑acid traction batteries used as power sources for electric propulsion. This Part 2 standard defines the maximum external dimensions of traction battery cells, the form and size of polarity marking on cell lids, and the basic dimensions of commonly used traction battery terminals (conical and bolted). Edition 4.0 (2008) is a technical revision that introduced new cell dimensions and supersedes the 1997 edition and its 2000 amendment.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Cell external dimensions: Specifies maximum overall width (b), height (h) and length (l) for standardized series and types (two width series: E (narrow) and L (wide)). Tabulated dimensions cover common European types; additional tables provide ranges prevalent in Asia and North America (for information).
  • Polarity marking: Requires at least the positive terminal to be marked on the cell lid. Marking must be the symbol “+” (indented or in relief); an optional “–” can mark the negative terminal. Symbols must comply with IEC 60417 and have a minimum dimension a ≥ 5 mm.
  • Terminal dimensions:
    • Conical terminals: Three standardized types (A, B, C) are specified for selection based on cable cross‑sectional area; conicity and basic dimensions are given to ensure interchangeability.
    • Bolted terminals: Four types of cable ends and corresponding bolt/hole sizes (e.g., M10 bolt, 11 mm hole) are defined for common industrial applications. Note: smaller terminals may be used for compact applications; IEC 60095‑2 covers smaller sizes.
  • Normative references: IEC 60417 (graphical symbols) is cited as indispensable for applying polarity marking requirements.

Applications and who uses this standard

EN 60254-2:2008 is intended for:

  • Battery manufacturers designing and building lead‑acid traction cells to ensure cross‑manufacturer interchangeability.
  • Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of electric propulsion systems (e.g., forklifts, industrial trucks, material‑handling equipment) specifying battery packs.
  • Design engineers and product developers specifying cell and terminal layouts to meet dimensional and marking requirements.
  • Procurement and maintenance teams selecting replacement cells or cables.
  • Testing laboratories and conformity assessors verifying marking and dimensional compliance. Benefits include simplified replacement, safer polarity identification, and standardized terminal interfaces for reliable electrical connections.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
