Overview
SIST EN IEC 60743:2013/A1:2026 is an amendment to the European standard defining terminology for tools, devices, and equipment used in live working. Developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), this standard aligns with IEC 60743 and establishes uniform definitions essential for safety, quality, and clarity in electrical work environments.
The terminology standardized in SIST EN IEC 60743:2013/A1:2026 is crucial for professionals working with energized electrical systems, helping to ensure consistent understanding and communication across different countries and industries. It covers terms related to live working, electrical safety, and testing of insulating materials and equipment.
Key Topics
Live Working Definitions
- Dead working: Performing electrical work on de-energized and grounded equipment.
- Live working: Involvement with energized parts or entry into the live working zone using tools, equipment, or body parts.
- Vicinity working: Activities in the proximity of energized equipment without entering the live zone.
Electrical Safety Testing
- Proof test: Demonstrates the safety of insulating materials or products by applying specified test conditions.
- Withstand test: Evaluates the dielectric strength of insulation under applied high voltage.
- Breakdown test: Subjects insulating material or products to electric stress until they transition from insulating to conductive.
Standardized Vocabulary
- Enhances safety protocols and procedures.
- Promotes uniformity in documentation, training, and operational processes within live electrical working environments.
Applications
SIST EN IEC 60743:2013/A1:2026 has wide applicability in the electrotechnical sector, particularly wherever live working procedures and electrical safety are prioritized. Key applications include:
Utility and Power Generation
Ensures clear communication and correct use of tools and devices during maintenance and operation of live electrical installations.Industrial Electrical Maintenance
Supports hazard identification and risk management by providing standardized definitions for safe working near or on live parts.Product Design and Testing
Assists manufacturers of insulating tools and equipment in ensuring they meet recognized definitions and testing requirements for proof, withstand, and breakdown tests.Worker Training and Certification
Serves as a foundation for safety training programs, ensuring personnel understand and apply internationally recognized terminology and concepts.Regulatory Compliance
Helps organizations demonstrate adherence to European and international standards for live working through consistent use of approved terms and safety protocols.
Related Standards
For comprehensive electrical safety and live working practices, SIST EN IEC 60743:2013/A1:2026 is commonly used alongside:
- IEC 60743:2013 - The base international standard for live working terminology.
- IEC 60050-651:2014 - International Electrotechnical Vocabulary, focused on live working terms.
