Overview
ISO 10499-1:2019 is an international standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the key requirements for rubber solid tyres in the metric series, designed to fit pneumatic tyre rims. Primarily targeted at industrial machines operating on prepared surfaces, this standard defines tyre designations, dimensions, and marking conventions to ensure consistency, safety, and compatibility in the industrial tyre sector. It updates and replaces the 1991 edition, reflecting revisions that include the addition of overall diameter specifications for solid tyres. Rim contours compatible with these tyres are defined in ISO 3739-1 and ISO 3739-3.
Key Topics
Tyre Designation System
The standard sets out a clear system for designating tyres based on:- Nominal section width measured in millimetres (increments ending with 0 or 5)
- Nominal aspect ratio expressed as a percentage (multiples of 5%)
- Nominal rim diameter and rim width codes represented by specific numeric values
This structured designation aids in precise identification and ordering of industrial solid tyres.
Marking Requirements
Tyres must be marked according to a four-part designation, indicating section width, aspect ratio, rim diameter code, and rim width code (e.g., 225/75 – 15/6.5). These markings provide vital specifications for users and manufacturers, facilitating correct tyre matching and ensuring safety standards.Dimension Specifications
The standard defines maximum dimensional parameters for rubber solid tyres that fit pneumatic rims, including:- Tyre section width and height limits aligned with pneumatic tyre counterparts (per ISO 3739-1)
- Overall diameter calculation, which is designed to be slightly smaller (about 2%) than corresponding pneumatic tyres to maintain similar static radius and performance characteristics
- Recommendations for defining “virtual” pneumatic tyre sizes for new solid tyres without equivalent pneumatic sizes
Size Range
A comprehensive table lists the recommended size ranges and maximum dimensions for metric series solid tyres covering numerous nominal section widths, rim diameters, rim widths, and aspect ratios. This extensive size matrix supports a wide variety of industrial applications.
Applications
ISO 10499-1:2019 plays a critical role in ensuring that solid rubber tyres used on pneumatic rims for industrial machinery meet international benchmarks. Practical applications include:
Industrial Equipment Safety & Reliability
Ensures that tyres fitted on forklifts, loaders, container handlers, and other industrial vehicles operate safely on prepared surfaces with predictable performance.Compatibility & Interchangeability
Assists manufacturers and end-users in selecting tyres that correctly fit existing rims, avoiding mismatches and potential accidents.Standardized Procurement
Facilitates bulk purchasing and inventory management by standardizing tyre sizes and markings, enabling clear communication among suppliers, manufacturers, and users worldwide.Product Development and Innovation
Helps tyre designers create new products that comply with established sizing and dimension criteria, promoting interoperability and market acceptance.
Related Standards
For comprehensive industrial tyre and rim specification and use, the following related ISO standards complement ISO 10499-1:
ISO 3739-1 – "Industrial tyres and rims - Part 1: Pneumatic tyres (metric series) on tapered or flat base rims - Designation, dimensions and marking"
Defines rim contours and dimensions corresponding to pneumatic tyres compatible with solid tyres under ISO 10499-1.ISO 3739-3 – "Industrial tyres and rims - Part 3: Rims"
Specifies detailed rim design standards supporting tyre mounting and stability.ISO 4223-2 – "Definitions of some terms used in the tyre industry - Part 2: Solid tyres"
Provides standardized terminology ensuring common understanding throughout tyre manufacturing and specification.ISO 3877-4 – "Tyres, valves and tubes - List of equivalent terms - Part 4: Solid tyres"
Aligns terminology used globally in solid tyre applications to minimize confusion.
Conclusion
ISO 10499-1:2019 is a vital standard for regulating the designation, dimensions, and marking of rubber solid tyres for pneumatic rims in the industrial sector. It ensures safety, interoperability, and quality in tyre production and use, particularly for industrial machinery operating on prepared surfaces. The detailed sizing and marking guidelines help manufacturers, suppliers, and users worldwide achieve consistency and precision, driving efficiency and safety in industrial tyre applications.
