This document specifies general requirements and test methods for volumetric valves able to automatically deliver preset quantities of water. It is applicable to valves actuated by pipeline pressure and flow alone, and which do not need any other, external, source of energy. NOTE Volumetric valves are typically required to operate correctly with different qualities of irrigation water at a variety of flow rates and at temperatures between 5 °C and 50 °C.

Overview

ISO 7714:2018 - "Agricultural irrigation equipment - Volumetric valves - General requirements and test methods" is the international standard that defines the general requirements, classification and test methods for volumetric valves used in agricultural irrigation. The document covers valves that automatically deliver preset quantities of water and are actuated solely by pipeline pressure and flow (no external energy source). It is the fifth edition (2018) and supersedes ISO 7714:2008. The standard notes typical operating conditions, for example performance across a variety of irrigation water qualities and temperatures between 5 °C and 50 °C.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Definitions and classification: Clear terms for volumetric, serial (single‑outlet, skip‑over, dual‑outlet) and non‑serial volumetric valves.
  • Accuracy classes:
    • Class 1 - cumulative volume counter accuracy ±2%
    • Class 2 - cumulative volume counter accuracy ±4%
    • Class 3 - preset volume mechanism without cumulative counter
  • Flow and pressure parameters: Definitions and requirements for minimum flow (qV1), permanent flow (qV3) and overload flow (qV4), and range of working pressures (minimum and maximum working pressure).
  • Markings: Mandatory permanent markings (manufacturer, serial number, flow direction, nominal pressure, accuracy class, qV3 and qV3/qV1 ratio, serial connection points).
  • Metrological requirements: Valves used for water measurement must comply with metrological characteristics such as those in ISO 16399:2014.
  • Mechanical, functional and accuracy tests: Pattern approval, thermal preconditioning, hydrostatic pressure resistance, manual opening/closing, accuracy across flow rates, pressure loss tests and endurance tests.
  • Materials and durability: Interchangeability of parts, resistance to agricultural chemicals, UV protection for non‑metallic parts and suitability for expected water qualities (Annex A: water quality / granulometry).

ISO 7714:2018 is a standard that provides general requirements and test methods for volumetric valves used in agricultural irrigation equipment. These valves are able to automatically deliver predetermined amounts of water and are operated by the pressure and flow of the pipeline alone, without the need for any additional source of energy. They are designed to function effectively with different qualities of irrigation water, at various flow rates, and within a temperature range of 5 °C to 50 °C.
