Overview

ISO 23308-2:2020 - "Energy efficiency of industrial trucks - Test methods - Part 2" defines standardized procedures to measure the energy consumption of operator‑controlled, self‑propelled industrial trucks, towing tractors and burden carriers. It is part of the ISO 23308 series and is intended to be used together with ISO 23308-1 (general test conditions and measurement principles). The standard provides specific test cycles, layouts and operating sequences for a wide range of truck types as classified in ISO 5053‑1.

Key Topics

  • Scope of machine types: counterbalance lift trucks, articulated counterbalance trucks, reach trucks, straddle trucks, pallet‑stacking and pallet trucks, order‑picking trucks, towing/pushing tractors, burden carriers, side/lateral multi‑directional lift trucks, and more.
  • Test methodology: defined test layouts (Figure 1 and Figure 2), cycle sequences and measured parameters (distances l and w, turning radius r).
  • Test parameters and duration:
    • Typical travelling lift height: 300 mm (transport height) or 150 mm for some pallet/stillage trucks.
    • Test duration: 1 hour, with the truck speed adapted to reach specified cycles per hour (values provided in Table 1 and Table 2).
    • Test load typically 0.7 × Q (rated capacity).
  • Operating requirements:
    • Clear prohibition of simultaneous operations (no travelling while lifting/tilting/reaching).
    • Specific action sequences per truck type (e.g., lift/tilt/reach operations at positions B and D).
    • For towing tractors/burden carriers, cycles use a minimum turning radius that can include trailers.
  • Reporting: manufacturers must document selected test parameters (distances, number of cycles, trailer specs) and report performance time if full cycle rate cannot be achieved within 1 hour.

Applications

  • Manufacturers: to evaluate and compare energy performance of truck models during design, product data sheets and R&D.
  • Fleet managers / end users: to inform procurement decisions based on measured energy consumption and operational cycle efficiency.
  • Market surveillance and regulatory bodies: for conformity checks, standardized performance comparisons and sustainability assessments.
  • Consultants and service providers: energy audits, lifecycle assessments and optimization of warehouse logistics and battery usage.

Related Standards

  • ISO 23308-1:2020 - General test methods for energy efficiency of industrial trucks (required companion document).
  • ISO 5053-1 - Terminology and classification of industrial truck types (defines truck types referenced).
  • ISO 3691-1:2011 - Safety requirements and verification for self‑propelled industrial trucks.
  • Note: the test cycles draw on the VDI 2198 guideline, widely used for measuring energy consumption of electric and IC industrial trucks.

Introduction
The ISO 23308 series deals with the energy efficiency of industrial trucks including batteries and
battery chargers.
ISO 23308-1 contains the procedures to determine the efficiency of trucks, traction batteries and
battery chargers. The other parts provide a specific test cycle for different truck types.
NOTE The test cycles are based on the VDI 2198 guideline. This guideline is widely accepted by industry and
is used to measure the energy consumption of electric industrial trucks and internal combustion (IC) industrial
trucks. The guideline has been in place since 1996 and it is used broadly. This approach allows the evaluation of
the energy efficiency of trucks by comparison.
The content of this document is of relevance for the following stakeholder groups:
— machine manufacturers (small, medium and large enterprises);
— market surveillance authorities;
— machine users (small, medium and large enterprises);
— service providers, e.g. for consulting activities.
The stakeholder groups above have been given the opportunity to participate at the drafting process of
this document. The machines concerned are indicated in the scope of this document.
