Overview
ISO 6742-3:2023 - "Cycles - Lighting and retro-reflective devices - Part 3: Installation and use of lighting and retro‑reflective devices" defines safety requirements, test methods and user/manufacturer instructions for lighting and retro‑reflective equipment fitted to cycles intended for use on public roads (especially bicycles compliant with ISO 4210 and ISO 8098). The standard covers installation, fixation, control ergonomics, maintenance guidance and the required test procedures (vibration and alignment) to confirm secure mounting and continued function.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & applicability: Devices for road use on cycles, including guidance for bicycle accessories and factory-fitted equipment.
- Installation requirements: Lighting must be mountable per the manufacturer’s instructions and fastening must not obscure the beam.
- Fixation and vibration testing:
- Two test methods for fixation: Method A (PSD vibration) and Method B (sine sweep per IEC 60068‑2‑6).
- Method A uses a power spectral density (PSD) random vibration profile (3–200 Hz or 6–200 Hz) for 10 h in the vertical (Z) direction (preferred state‑of‑the‑art method).
- Method B (sine sweep) follows IEC 60068‑2‑6 conditions (sweep duration and amplitude per the standard).
- Acceptance: no fractures, functional operation, no bolt failure/loosening, and no movement between device and fixture after testing.
- Control and ergonomics: Combined-function devices must identify each function on the control device and be easily operable by the cyclist; ISO 7000 symbols are recommended.
- Retro‑reflectors: Optical axis deflection shall not exceed 15° during mechanical tests and permanent displacement must be ≤ 5° after testing. Test applies forces of 90 N in multiple directions for 1 minute.
- Measurement and test conditions: Typical ambient test conditions (23 ± 5 °C, RH 50 ± 20%). Measurement device accuracies include angles ±0.1°, current ±1%, forces ±1%, speed ±3%, time ±1%, temperature ±5 °C, voltage ±1%.
- Manufacturer’s instructions: Detailed content required (fit dimensions, torque values, assembly, adjustment to avoid glare, power-supply compatibility, maintenance, safety/legal notes, battery recycling, etc.).
Applications and users
Who benefits from ISO 6742-3:2023:
- Bicycle and cycle lighting manufacturers (design, validation, product instructions)
- Test laboratories and certification bodies (vibration and fixation testing)
- OEMs and accessory suppliers (mounting and compatibility requirements)
- Retailers and fleet operators (installation guidance and user safety info)
- Regulators and standards bodies referencing cycle lighting safety
Practical value: improves product safety, reduces mounting failures on the road, ensures clear user instructions, and supports regulatory compliance and market acceptance.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO document should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use
of (a) patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed
patent rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received
notice of (a) patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are
cautioned that this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent

This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 149, Cycles, Subcommittee SC 1, Cycles
and major sub-assemblies.
This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 6742-3:2015), which has been technically
revised.
The main changes are as follows:
— 4.1 was changed from "Tolerances" to "Accuracy of measurement devices";
— improvement of Clause 7.

Introduction
The test method with power spectral density (PSD) (see 6.1.2.2) reflects today's state of the art and
should be preferred to the sine sweep vibration test (see 6.1.2.3).
