Inflatable play equipment - Part 3: Additional safety requirements and test methods for snappies
This part of ISO 20187 is applicable to inflatable play equipment intended for use by children fourteen years and under, both individually and collectively. This part of ISO 20187 specifies additional safety requirements for snappies for which the primary activities are climbing and sliding. It sets measures to address risks and also to minimize accidents to users for those involved in the design, manufacture and supply of inflatable play equipment. It specifies information to be supplied with the equipment. The requirements have been laid down bearing in mind the risk factor based on available data. This part of the ISO 20187 specifies requirements to protect a child from hazards that he or she might be unable to foresee when using the equipment as intended, or in a manner that can be reasonably anticipated. This part of the ISO 20187 is not applicable to inflatable water-borne play and leisure equipment, domestic inflatable toys, air-supported buildings, inflatables used solely for protection, inflatables used for rescue, or other types of inflatable toys where the primary activity is not bouncing or sliding.

Overview
ISO 20187-3:2022 - "Inflatable play equipment - Part 3: Additional safety requirements and test methods for snappies" provides targeted safety rules and test methods for inflatable play structures known as snappies. Applicable to equipment intended for children aged 14 years and under, this part of the ISO 20187 series specifies measures to reduce risk during climbing and sliding activities, and defines the information that must accompany the equipment. It is intended for designers, manufacturers, suppliers, testing bodies and operators of commercial inflatable play equipment.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definition
- Applies to snappies (inflated structures with a hinged platform that elevates users to a higher exit point such as a slide or ramp).
- Excludes water-borne inflatables, domestic toys, air-supported buildings, rescue/protection inflatables, and inflatables whose primary activity is not bouncing or sliding.
- Free height of fall
- Maximum free fall from hinged platform to base bed: ≤ 3.0 m, provided the bed meets impact attenuation criteria per EN 1177:2018+AC:2019.
- Positioning and clearances
- Detailed clear-space rules for snappies on walled and flat (no-wall) inflatable beds:
- Entrances: ≥50% of hinged-platform height (with minimum dimensions such as ≥1.2 m or an added clearance of +1.5 m when on flat beds).
- Exits involving forced movement (slides): ≥50% of platform height plus +0.5 m (walled) or +1.0 m (no-wall).
- Side clearances vary (typical minima ≥1.2 m, or ≥2.0 m for sides on flat beds).
- Detailed clear-space rules for snappies on walled and flat (no-wall) inflatable beds:
- Containment
- Hinged platform must not act as a step-up to exterior walls.
- For platforms >1.2 m above bed, containing walls at least equal to user height are required on both sides.
- Entrapment prevention
- Avoid shearing hazards from the hinged motion.
- Internal apertures and spacing follow ISO 20187-1:2022 rules for body entrapment.
- Netting mesh must prevent an 8 mm finger-rod from passing through.
- Maintain a gap between the hinged platform and roof to avoid body entrapment.
- Marking and information
- Graphical safety symbols at hinged-platform entrances.
- Connection tubes must be marked with the required blower type.
Applications and users
- Practical uses:
- Product design and engineering of commercial snappies
- Manufacturing quality and compliance checks
- Third‑party testing and certification
- Procurement specifications for event organizers, indoor play centres, and rental companies
- Site installation, inspection and operator safety procedures
- Primary users:
- Inflatable equipment designers and manufacturers
- Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
- Playground safety inspectors, venue operators and regulators

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted (see www.iso.org/directives).

drafted in accordance with its editorial rules. It was assigned to Technical Committee ISO/TC 83, Sports
and other recreational facilities and equipment and adopted, without modification other than those given
below, under the "fast-track procedure":
— references to EN documents were replaced with their equivalent ISO standards.
This first edition of ISO 20187-3, together with ISO 20187-1 and ISO 20187-2, cancels and replaces

Introduction
Play is the means by which children discover and understand the world in which they live and is an
essential element in a child’s physical and mental growth.
It is important for children’s rounded development that, through play, they arrive at an understanding
of danger, which provides a basis for assessing safety in a variety of situations. The balance between
challenge and safety is an important consideration.
The inflatable play equipment referred to in this document can provide different levels of challenge and
excitement. This docume
