ISO/IEC 20931:2025 - Overview

Standard reference: ISO/IEC 20931:2025
ISO/IEC 20931:2025 defines a set of standardized user interface icons for representing services in serviced offices. It provides icons to specify functions and indicate the status of serviced-office offerings used in search, booking and advertising applications. The standard covers basic, additional and miscellaneous icons for facilities, equipment and services that address working styles, tools, amenities, language and accessibility needs (including for older persons).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Icon scope and purpose
    • Icons represent service functions and, where appropriate, service states (but not binary availability graphics covered by other symbol standards).
    • Intended for use in apps and websites for searching, booking and advertising serviced-office services.
  • Icon categories
    • Basic icons: Internet connection, workplace, supporting activities, booking, agency, internet (web) meeting space, private space, meeting space, phone booth, desk with partitions.
    • Additional icons: Accessibility support, external display and related services.
    • Miscellaneous icons: Coworking space, event space, child-care, facilities, amenities, etc.
  • Design and usage guidance
    • Icons should be used as entry points to detailed information (e.g., booking, registration, space capacity, equipment).
    • Visual adaptations (colour, style) are permitted per ISO/IEC 11581-1 and ISO/IEC 11581-2 provided the original functionality is preserved.
    • The standard recommends consistency so that icon representation matches user perception of services.
  • What it does not cover
    • Binary availability/unavailability symbols - these are handled by IEC 60417, ISO 7000, ISO 7001 and ISO 7010.
  • Metadata linked to icons
    • Icons are expected to link to structured details such as number of spaces, capacity, area, equipment, fee and booking procedures.

Practical applications and users

  • Who benefits
    • UI/UX designers and mobile/web app developers building serviced-office search and booking platforms.
    • Serviced office operators, property managers and booking marketplaces that need consistent service representation.
    • Accessibility specialists ensuring icons communicate services for older persons and users with special needs.
    • Marketing and listing services that advertise serviced-office offerings.
  • Use cases
    • A coworking marketplace displaying standardized icons for internet access, meeting rooms, childcare or accessibility supports.
    • Booking workflows that present a booking icon to start registration and calendar selection.
    • Directory and map-based search tools that use icons as touch targets to reveal service details.

Introduction
For a serviced office that is defined as a part of third workplace (i.e. non-home, non-office), there are a
variety of service forms and usage patterns. When users look for a serviced office from websites or by search
application, it is convenient if there are icons that represent available services of serviced offices. In such a
case, it is important to maintain consistency between icon representation for a service of a serviced office
and the perceived service of the icon user. This document defines icons for use on websites or applications
for searching for serviced offices.
