Overview
IEC 60688:1992/AMD2:2001 is an internationally recognized amendment published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) focusing on electrical measuring transducers designed to convert alternating current (a.c.) electrical quantities into analogue or digital signals. This amendment updates technical and normative references crucial for the accurate and safe measurement of electrical parameters, ensuring transducer performance meets modern requirements.
Prepared by IEC Technical Committee 85, which specializes in equipment for measuring electrical and electromagnetic quantities, this amendment refines definitions, test procedures, and compliance criteria to enhance the reliability and interoperability of measurement devices within the electrical industry.
Key Topics
Transducer Performance and Definitions:
The amendment revises key definitions such as measuring range and ripple content to better align with international measurements practices. For example, "ripple" in analogue output signals is precisely defined to quantify fluctuations under steady-state conditions.Updated Normative References:
IEC 60688 Amendment 2 replaces earlier standards references with the latest editions including:- IEC 61010-1:2001 - Safety requirements for electrical equipment used in measurement and control.
- IEC 60051-1:1997 - Definitions and general requirements for analogue electrical measuring instruments.
- IEC 61000-4 series - Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing and measurement techniques.
Testing and Performance Requirements:
Guidelines for testing the transducers cover:- Variation due to input over-range (up to 150% of nominal input).
- Ripple measurement in analogue outputs.
- Effects of power factor variations on active and reactive power transducers.
- Auxiliaries supply conditions and their influence on transducer accuracy.
Safety and EMC Compliance:
The amendment updates safety test references to IEC 61010-1 and aligns disturbance testing with IEC 61000-4, ensuring transducers meet stringent electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards vital for industrial applications.Marking and Usage Conditions:
Specification updates include requirements for marking nominal temperature ranges on equipment cases, categorized by usage groups I, II, or III, assisting users in identifying environmental limits for transducer operation.
Applications
IEC 60688:1992/AMD2:2001 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and end-users involved in:
Energy Metering and Power Monitoring:
Ensuring the accuracy of power transducers in electrical grids and industrial plants helps optimize energy usage and billing systems.Control and Automation Systems:
Reliable conversion of a.c. electrical signals to digital/analogue outputs facilitates precise control in automated processes.Calibration and Testing Services:
Laboratories utilize the standard for conformity testing, calibration, and verification of transducer performance under varying electrical conditions.Electrical Safety Assurance:
Compliance with updated safety standards safeguards operators and equipment from electrical hazards during measurement and control.Electromagnetic Compatibility Compliance:
The standard aids designers in developing transducers that maintain performance integrity in environments with high electromagnetic interference.
