IEC 63516:2026 is an IEC International Standard for the fixed folding durability test method for flexible opto-electric circuit boards (FOECB). It specifies how to run a folding durability test so users of opto-electric wiring can obtain uniform data for optic-fibre-type FOECB in tension and free-tension folded states.

What does IEC 63516:2026 specify?

IEC 63516:2026 specifies a test method for fixed folding durability data on flexible opto-electric circuit boards, with a focus on optic-fibre-type FOECB. The document is written for people who need repeatable test results on folding durability, together with optical, electrical and mechanical observations.

The standard is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, theory of the method, apparatus, test specimen, procedure and report. It also includes two informative annexes.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AGuidance for the fixed folding durability test apparatus for multifibre lines
Annex BA test system for satisfying different test conditions simultaneously

What are the key requirements of IEC 63516:2026?

IEC 63516:2026 defines a fixed folding test in which the specimen is held in a bent state for a long period while optical signals are monitored. In practice, this means the user can compare how quickly a specimen loses optical performance or fails under set bending radii.

  • Clause 5 describes the apparatus: a laser source, a photodetector, a data acquisition device, folding jigs and a test chamber. The setup matters because the measured optical signal must pass through the specimen and be recorded reliably.
  • Clause 5.2 and 5.3 require the laser and photodetector to have enough optical power range and sensitivity for the expected attenuation. In practice, the source and detector must be selected to match the specimen and the bending radius.
  • Clause 5.4 uses bending jigs with several radii, and indicates radii of 2.0 mm, 2.5 mm, 3.0 mm and 4.0 mm with a recommended tolerance of ±10 %. This lets the user compare durability across defined bend severities.
  • Clause 6 defines the specimen structure for FOECB, including a central optical circuit, peripheral electrical circuits and a protruding fibre area. The specimen size, thickness and fibre type must suit the test rig and the intended product.
  • Clause 7.2 requires initial measurement of optical performance, including attenuation and crosstalk, and electrical resistance before bending starts. This gives the baseline needed to judge damage after testing.
  • Clause 7.3 and 7.4 describe two test conditions: free-tension load and tension load. The specimen is tested at a starting bend radius of 4.0 mm, then reduced in 0.5 mm steps, with 1 000 h at each radius until failure or cracking appears.
  • Clause 7.5 and 7.6 require final optical and electrical checks after conditioning, followed by inspection for delamination and buckling. This tells the reader whether folding has changed signal performance and whether the structure still looks mechanically sound.
  • Clause 8 lists the test report items, including specimen dimensions, fibre type, source and detector details, environmental conditions, bending conditions, and before/after performance results. That makes the test record usable for comparison, audits and supplier communication.

What terms does IEC 63516:2026 define?

  • Flexible opto-electric circuit board (FOECB) - a flexible printed circuit board that contains both optical and electrical circuits in a flexible sheet.
  • Durée limite de durabilité au pliage fixe - the total time until a specimen fails under specified fixed-folding conditions.
  • Charge de tension libre - a folding condition where the specimen is bent without tension in the jig groove.
  • Charge de tension - a folding condition where the specimen is bent with a weight applied.
  • Photodétecteur - the device that converts the optical signal passing through the specimen into an electrical signal for monitoring.
  • Source laser - the optical source used to send the test signal through the specimen.

Who uses IEC 63516:2026?

IEC 63516:2026 is used by test laboratories, FOECB manufacturers, cable and wiring suppliers, and buyers who need comparable folding durability data. It is also relevant to quality and reliability engineers who set up bend-life tests, check optical attenuation and crosstalk, and document whether a specimen survives the defined folding conditions.

Which standards are used with IEC 63516:2026?

  • IEC 62496-2-1 - used for measuring optical attenuation and optical isolation/crosstalk before and after the folding test.
  • IEC 60068-1 - used for the normal atmospheric conditions applied before the final measurements.
  • IEC 60068-2-14 - cited for temperature variation conditions and the temperature-stabilization difference used when thermal endurance is required.
  • IEC 61300-3-7 - used as the basis for optical power measurement referenced for detector sensitivity.
  • IEC 60793-2-10 and IEC 60793-2-20 - used to identify glass fibre types mentioned for the test specimen.

What does the IEC 63516 document contain?

The document contains the test theory, apparatus descriptions, specimen preparation, step-by-step test procedures and report content needed to run the method. It includes figures showing the specimen concept, the single-fibre and multifibre test systems, and the free-tension and tension jig arrangements.

Annex A gives a multifibre apparatus concept for cases where several fibres are tested together. Annex B describes a multichannel approach so several specimens can be measured at the same time, which is useful when sequential testing would take too long.

4 Method theory
The fixed folding tester is a device that maintains a test sample composed of optic fibres and
electric circuits in a fixed-folded state for a long time. This test system is a device for monitoring
changes in optical signals flowing through the test sample and evaluating the durability of the
test sample over time. If the test sample is kept in the fixed-folded state for a long time with a
jig (cylindrical bar) in the tester, the deterioration of the optic fibre will gradually progress over
time and then breaks at a certain time. If the test sample is damaged, the flow of the optical
signal in the test system is cut off, and the intensity of the electrical signal at the output end of
the photo detector can be lowered to near zero. The flow process of this optical signal is
checked through the PC monitor in the test system, and it is confirmed that the test sample
used for the fixed folding test can be in a state that can no longer be used at a certain point or
more. See Figure 2.
Figure 2 – Concept for fixed folding durability test method of test sample
5 Apparatus
5.1 Fixed folding durability tester
The fixed folding durability tester for single fibre line (hereafter test system) shall be composed
of a laser source, a test sample, a photo detector and a data acquisition device.
The optic cable shall be used to connect the laser source and the photo detector centered on
the test sample. Besides, the connection between the photo detector and the data acquisition
device (composed of multi meter and the PC) uses an electric cable (see Figure 3).
Here, the optical wavelength of the laser source and the photo detector should be selected
according to the use of the test sample or the user's needs.
The operating principle of the test system is as follows. The optical signal emitted from the laser
source is transmitted to the photo detector through the test sample through the optical cable,
where it is converted into an electrical signal (voltage or current). Here, the intensity of the
electrical signal at the output terminal of the photo detector is proportional to the intensity of
the optical signal passing through the test sample, and these measured values are recorded
through the data acquisition device, including personal computer (hereafter PC).
Figure 3 – Concept of fixed folding durability tester for single fibre line

According to the user's request, the test sample can be composed of several optic fibres. In
this case, the test system should be configured by adding an optic coupler.
A general guideline for the fixed folding durability tester for multi-fibre lines is described in
Annex A.

5.2 Source laser
