Overview

IEC 62061:2021/AMD2:2026, published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), is Amendment 2 to the widely recognized standard IEC 62061, which addresses the functional safety of safety-related control systems in machinery. Building on prior versions, this amendment incorporates clarifications and refinements to ensure that safety systems for machinery align with the latest best practices in functional safety and risk reduction. IEC 62061 is an essential standard for machine builders, integrators, and users seeking to achieve, demonstrate, and maintain compliance with functional safety requirements.

Key Topics

  • Functional Safety of Control Systems: This amendment updates requirements for the design, implementation, and validation of safety-related control systems to protect people and assets in industrial environments.
  • Safety Integrity Levels (SIL): Clarifies how to assign and justify Safety Integrity Levels specifically for subsystems, including guidance on evaluating and claiming SIL based on system architecture and failure rates.
  • Diagnostics and Fault Response: Introduces more detailed guidance for using diagnostics to detect dangerous failures and defines how response functions must ensure the machine reaches or maintains a safe state if a fault is detected.
  • Subsystem Strategies: Provides options for handling faults in subsystems-such as isolating problematic channels with hardware fault tolerance (HFT) until repairs are made, while balancing safety and production needs.
  • Reference to Related Technical Specifications: Highlights connections with IEC TS 63394:2023 regarding recommendations for using subsystems in various operation modes.
  • Periodic Functional Testing: Requirements are enhanced to ensure regular testing and validation of diagnostic functions, especially where periodic proof tests are required.
  • Application of Emergency Devices: Updates handling for emergency stop devices (per IEC 60947-5-5, ISO 13850) and command switches (per IEC 60947-5-8) as part of the subsystem evaluation process.

Applications

IEC 62061:2021/AMD2:2026 applies to a broad range of industries and machine types where safety-related control systems are vital for risk reduction. Key practical applications include:

AVANT-PROPOS
L’IEC
