What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026?
prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026 focuses on how these appliances are identified, instructed, built, cleaned, and tested in commercial use. The most important changes are in the user information, hygiene, ergonomics, and the special annexes for machine variants.
Use conditions and instructions
The amendment broadens the scope language so the hazards considered are those of intended use in normal surroundings, including contact by domestic animals. For readers, this means the safety case is not limited to the operator alone.
Clause 7 strengthens the instructions for appliances intended for areas open to the public. The instructions have to cover use by persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities under supervision or instruction, supervision of children from 8 years of age, keeping children and domestic animals away from play or unintended access, not leaving cords hanging over edges, not using the appliance under 8 years of age, checking the cavity for domestic animals before use, and keeping children away from cleaning and maintenance.
The instructions also have to state whether the appliance is intended for an area open to the public and whether it may be installed less than 850 mm above the floor. In practice, that tells installers and buyers where the appliance may be placed and what user warnings must stay with it.
Heating, endurance and noise
Clause 11 changes the heating test wording, including removal of a measurement-instrument sentence and some references to the manufacturer in tables. Clause 18 removes a manufacturer agreement wording from the endurance text. These are practical test and assessment changes that affect how conformity is checked rather than changing the product category itself.
The amendment also states that generated noise is not treated as a relevant hazard and gives an A-weighted emission sound pressure level limit. For users, that means noise is handled as a stated condition rather than a separate safety topic.
Construction, hygiene and ergonomics
Clause 22 adds a hygiene requirement and sends compliance checking to inspection and Annex ZAA. Annex ZAA then sets the hygiene model for food area, splash area, and non-food area, so designers must separate and clean these zones with that classification in mind.
For surfaces in the splash area, the joints must be easy to clean, and where required disinfect, and they must resist cracking, chipping, flaking, abrasion, and penetration of unwanted matter. Bases, feet and castors must be suitable for their purpose and easy to clean, with sealed cavities where needed. Ventilation openings must not be in the food area and their airflow must not be directed at the food area.
Annex ZAA also requires the instruction handbook to address special utensils and accessories for mechanical cleaning, unsuitable accessories that could damage surfaces, and hygienic maintenance, including inspection intervals, replacement criteria, food-grade lubricants, cleaning and disinfection after contamination, and hygiene during shutdown and restart. In practice, this means the cleaning concept and maintenance plan are part of the product safety design.
Power driven moving parts
Annex ZE adds specific requirements for commercial microwave ovens with power driven moving parts. It limits the working height, limits the usable interior depth, requires operator controls to be visible, identifiable, within easy reach, and protected against accidental actuation when that could create a hazard, and requires lids to have at least one handle that prevents scalding by steam. Compliance is checked by inspection, and one lid requirement is checked by functional test.
What terms does prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026 define?
In this amendment, appliance is used for the product under safety assessment, and it is also used with the meaning of equipment for the radio-related scope. Machine is used where the document extends appliance language to powered commercial equipment.
Radio appliance means the same as radio equipment in this scope. Food area is the zone associated with food contact or food handling, while splash area is the area exposed to splashes, including the cavity ceiling in the annex figure. Non-food area is the zone not intended to be a food area or splash area.
A-weighted emission sound pressure level is abbreviated as LpA. In this document, it is the acoustic quantity used when stating the noise limit for the appliance.
Who uses prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026?
prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026 is used by manufacturers of commercial microwave ovens, including versions with power driven moving parts, conveyors, or radio functions. It is also used by design engineers, safety and compliance teams, hygiene specialists, ergonomics specialists, test laboratories, and certification bodies.
In practice, these users rely on it to design the product, write instructions, set up tests, check cleaning and maintenance information, and assess conformity for kitchens and food-service sites such as restaurants, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, and butcheries.
What changed in prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026 from the previous edition?
prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026 supersedes EN IEC 60335-2-90:2021+A1:2021. The amendment introduces requirements and instructions for children, vulnerable people and domestic animals, requirements for power driven moving parts, mechanical test set-up clarifications, hygienic requirements, and ergonomic requirements.
It also updates the EU relationship annexes so the document can be used alongside Directive 2014/35/EU, Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, and Directive 2014/53/EU.
Which standards are used with prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026?
prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026 is read with EN IEC 60335-1:2023, which provides the general safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, and with EN 1672-2:2020, which supplies hygiene and cleanability requirements used by Annex ZAA.
The document also names IEC 60068-2-6, IEC 60068-2-27, and IEC 60068-2-52 for vibration, shock, and cyclic salt mist testing. It references IEC 60584-1 for thermocouple EMF specifications and tolerances, and ISO 898-1 plus ISO 3506-1, ISO 3506-2, ISO 3506-3, and ISO 3506-4 for fastener mechanical properties.
Annex ZA also names related appliance parts: IEC 60335-2-36, IEC 60335-2-42, IEC 60335-2-49, and IEC 60335-2-75. It also lists IEC 60436 as a measurement method reference for dishwasher performance. Annex ZE points readers to EN 614-1 and EN 614-2 for ergonomic design guidance.
What does the prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026 document contain?
prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026 contains the detailed amendment text for the base Part 2 standard, plus annexed special requirements for combination ovens, conveyor-type ovens without a cavity door, power driven moving parts, and hygiene. It also contains the correspondence tables in Annexes ZZA, ZZB, and ZZC that map the standard to EU legal objectives.
The document includes Figure ZAA.1 for the food area, splash area, and non-food area classification, and it uses inspection, functional test, and hygiene-based conformity checks rather than repeating the full technical criteria in the overview.
