prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026 is a CENELEC draft European Standard for the safety of commercial microwave ovens. It sets particular safety requirements for microwave appliances used in commercial food processing, including combination microwave ovens, conveyor-type ovens without a cavity door, and shipboard use, for rated voltages up to 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between phase and neutral and 480 V for other appliances.
What does prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026 specify?
prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026 specifies safety requirements for commercial microwave ovens and related variants. The scope covers ovens with a cavity door, combination microwave ovens, microwave ovens without a cavity door and with conveyor-type means, and microwave ovens intended for use on board ships.
The document follows the IEC 60335 structure. The main part contains Clauses 1 to 32, with annexes that add tests and special requirements for specific appliance types and use conditions. It also states that the text is read in conjunction with prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026/prAA:2026.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Routine tests |
| Annex R | Software evaluation |
| Annex AA | Combination microwave ovens |
| Annex BB | Commercial microwave ovens without a cavity door and with conveyor-type means |
| Annex CC | Overview of requirements for covers, means of access and similar |
| Annex DD | Rationales for the microwave barrier and associated leakage tests |
| Annex EE | Microwave ovens intended to be used on board ships |
What are the key requirements of prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026?
The standard combines general appliance safety tests with microwave-specific controls for leakage, temperature rise, door systems, and access protection. In practice, a manufacturer has to show that the oven stays safe in normal use, abnormal operation, cleaning, servicing, transport vibration, and the special conditions covered in the annexes.
Marking and instructions
- Clause 7 requires the appliance to be marked with the nominal frequency in megahertz of the ISM band it uses. This helps identify the operating band and supports correct installation and service work.
- Clause 7 also requires warning text when a cover can expose microwave energy, and hot-surface marking when external temperatures can exceed the applicable limits. In practice, the user must be warned about both microwave exposure and burn risk.
- Clause 7.12 lists operating and safety instructions such as door and seal damage warnings, sealed-container warnings, delayed boiling warnings, cleaning instructions, and probe-use instructions. This matters because the standard expects the manufacturer to tell users how to avoid explosion, scalding, fire, and hygiene problems.
Test conditions, heating, and leakage limits
- Clause 5 requires testing with the appliance in the most unfavorable normal-use condition, including stacked combinations and movable parts. Microwave ovens are tested as motor-operated appliances, and class III temperature-sensing probes are only subjected to the test of 22.112.
- Clause 11 sets the heating test conditions and the temperature-rise measurements for accessible surfaces. Tables 101 and 102 define the permitted surface temperature rises, and the reader should note that public-area use has tighter limits for some surfaces.
- Clause 18 requires endurance testing of the door system through repeated opening and closing cycles, first with microwave generation and then without it. After the test, leakage must remain within the limit and the door system must still function.
- Clause 19 replaces the Part 1 abnormal-operation approach with dedicated tests, including empty operation, short-circuited controls, single-fault simulation, and a potato ignition test. This shows whether the appliance contains fire and remains acceptably safe when controls or cooling conditions go wrong.
- Clause 32 sets the microwave leakage limit and the measurement method. The standard uses a 50 W/m reading at 50 mm or more from the appliance for the general leakage test, with a higher ceiling value used in the detailed measurement procedure. For a buyer or test lab, this is the core pass-fail safety check.
Construction and protection systems
- Clause 22 requires door interlocks, concealed interlocks, and, where applicable, monitored door interlocks. The appliance must stop microwave generation before access can create undue leakage or exposure.
- Clause 22 also checks resistance to tampering, trapped probes, removed detachable parts, door distortion, and contaminated seals. These tests matter because many real-world hazards come from damaged doors, loose parts, or dirty seals.
- Clause 22.119 addresses electronic protection against microwave leakage, and Clause 22.121 checks programmable electronic circuits that limit simultaneous energizing of heaters and motors. In practice, safety must not depend on a single software decision or a single electronic fault.
- Clause 25 and Clause 27 cover supply cords, permanent connection arrangements, and equipotential bonding for stationary appliances. This is important for installation safety and for keeping exposed metal parts at the same potential.
- Annex BB adds special requirements for conveyor-type ovens and vending-machine-related designs, including barriers, interlocks, access protection, transport means, and leakage testing at openings.
- Annex EE adds ship-specific requirements such as IPX6 for open-deck use, frequency marking, cleaning and fastening instructions, vibration and pulse resistance, and rusting resistance by salt mist test.
What terms does prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026 define?
- microwave oven - An appliance that uses electromagnetic energy in one or more ISM frequency bands between 300 MHz and 30 GHz to heat food and beverages in a cavity.
- combination microwave oven - A microwave oven in which resistive heating elements also heat the cavity, either at the same time or in sequence.
- cavity - The space enclosed by the inner walls and the door where the load is placed and heated.
- door interlock - A device or system that prevents the microwave generator(s) from operating unless the oven door is closed.
- monitored door interlock - A door interlock system that includes a supervision device so a failure is detected and the appliance is rendered safe.
- transportation means - The means that move the load through the microwave oven, such as a belt, an arm, or an inclined plane.
- microwave enclosure - The structure intended to confine microwave energy to a defined region.
- microwave barrier - A microwave-transparent physical barrier outside the microwave enclosure that limits access and can only be removed with tools.
Who uses prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026?
Manufacturers of commercial microwave ovens use this standard to design the appliance, choose interlocks, define markings, and prepare test evidence. Test laboratories and certification bodies use it to carry out leakage, temperature, endurance, abnormal-operation, vibration, and rusting tests.
It is also used by quality managers, buyers, installers, and service organizations in commercial kitchens, canteens, hospitals, bakeries, butcheries, vending applications, and marine installations. For shipboard equipment, it helps specify the added requirements for open-deck, dayroom, fastening, and corrosion conditions.
What changed in prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026 from the previous edition?
prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026 supersedes EN IEC 60335-2-90:2021 and its amendment and corrigendum set. The draft text is based on IEC 60335-2-90:2024.
Which standards are used with prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026?
- IEC 60068-2-6, IEC 60068-2-27, IEC 60068-2-52 - provide the vibration, shock, and salt mist test methods used for transport and ship-related durability checks.
- IEC 60335-2-36, IEC 60335-2-42, IEC 60335-2-49, IEC 60335-2-75 - related appliance standards cited for commercial cooking ranges, forced convection ovens, food warming appliances, and dispensing/vending appliances.
- IEC 60436:2015 and IEC 60436:2015/AMD1:2020 - listed among the normative references used by the document.
- IEC 60584-1 - supplies thermocouple EMF specifications and tolerances for the temperature probe shown in Figure 102.
- ISO 898-1 and ISO 3506-1 to ISO 3506-4 - define the properties of carbon-steel and corrosion-resistant stainless-steel fasteners used where screw strength and earthing continuity matter.
What does the prEN IEC 60335-2-90:2026 document contain?
The document contains the full clause structure for safety requirements, plus annexes for special appliance types and supporting information. It includes test fixtures and measurement figures for door interlock concealment, surface temperature measurement, and leakage measurement at access openings.
It also includes tables for accessible-surface temperature limits, the number of potatoes used in the ignition test, and assembling torques for screws that provide earthing continuity. Annex CC gives an overview table for covers and means of access, while Annex DD explains the reasoning behind the microwave barrier and leakage test approach.
For testing and certification, the document provides procedures for endurance cycling, abnormal operation, moisture resistance, vibration, leakage under fault and tamper conditions, and shipboard corrosion resistance. For design work, it shows where barriers, interlocks, viewing openings, vents, shelves, and transport means are treated as safety-relevant parts.

INTRODUCTION
It has been assumed in the drafting of this International Standard that the execution of its
provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experienced persons.
Guidance documents concerning the application of the safety requirements for appliances can
be accessed via TC 61 and SC 61B supporting documents on the IEC website
https://www.iec.ch/tc61/supportingdocuments
https://www.iec.ch/sc61b/supportingdocuments
This information is given for the convenience of users of this International Standard and does
not constitute a replacement for the normative text in this standard.
This standard recognizes the internationally accepted level of protection against hazards such
as electrical, mechanical, thermal, fire and radiation of appliances when operated as in normal
use taking into account the manufacturer's instructions. It also covers abnormal situations that
can be expected in practice and takes into account the way in which electromagnetic
phenomena can affect the safe operation of appliances.
This standard takes into account the requirements of IEC 60364 as far as possible so that there
is compatibility with the wiring rules when the appliance is connected to the supply mains.
However, national wiring rules can differ.
If an appliance within the scope of this standard also incorporates functions that are covered
by another part 2 of IEC 60335, the relevant part 2 is applied to each function separately, as
far as is reasonable. If applicable, the influence of one function on the other is taken into
account.
When a part 2 standard does not include additional requirements to cover hazards dealt with in
Part 1, Part 1 applies.
NOTE 1 This means that the technical committees responsible for the part 2 standards have determined that it is
not necessary to specify particular requirements for the appliance in question over and above the general
requirements.
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
NOTE 2 Horizontal publications, basic safety publications and group safety publications covering a hazard are not
applicable since they have been taken into consideration when developing the general and particular requirements
for the IEC 60335 series of standards.
An appliance that complies with the text of this standard will not necessarily be considered to
comply with the safety principles of the standard if, when examined and tested, it is found to
have other features which impair the level of safety covered by these requirements.
An appliance employing materials or having forms of construction differing from those detailed
in the requirements of this standard can be examined and tested according to the intent of the
requirements and, if found to be substantially equivalent, may be considered to comply with the
standard.
NOTE 3 Standards dealing with non-safety aspects of household appliances are:
– IEC standards published by TC 59 concerning methods of measuring performance;
– CISPR 11, CISPR 14-1 and relevant IEC 61000-3 series standards concerning electromagnetic emissions;
– CISPR 14-2 concerning electromagnetic immunity;
– IEC standards published by TC 111 concerning environmental matters.

HOUSEHOLD AND SIMILAR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES –
SAFETY –
Part 2-90: Particular requirements for commercial microwave ovens
1 Scope
This clause of Part 1 is replaced by the following.
This part of IEC 60335 deals with:
– the safety of microwave ovens with a cavity door intended for commercial use, their rated
voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances connected between one
phase and neutral and 480 V for other appliances.
These appliances are not intended for household and similar purposes. They are used for
commercial processing of food, also in areas open to the public, for example in kitchens
of restaurants, canteens, hospitals and in commercial enterprises such as bakeries and
butcheries;
– the safety of combination microwave ovens with a cavity door, the requirements of which
are contained in normative Annex AA;
– the safety of microwave ovens without a cavity door and with transportation means that
are intended for commercial use only, for the heating of food and beverages, the
requirements of which are contained in normative Annex BB.
Microwave ovens covered by normative Annex BB have transportation means for moving the
load through the microwave oven. Requirements for tunnel microwave ovens and several
types of microwave vending machines are covered.
This standard also deals with microwave ovens intended to be used on board ships, for which
normative Annex EE is applicable.
In normative Annex BB, a microwave oven without a cavity door and with transportation
means is described as a microwave oven. All clauses of this standard apply to these
appliances unless otherwise specified in normative Annex BB.
This part of IEC 60335 also takes into account ordinary persons having access to the
removing area of the vending machine.
The appliance can be built into a vending machine, in which case IEC 60335-2-75 can also be
applicable.
Appliances that use non-electrical energy are within the scope of this standard.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by these types
of appliances.
This standard does not take into account the use of a microwave oven without a cavity door
and with transportation means by ordinary persons except in the vicinity of entrance and
exit ports.
The rationales for particular microwave exposure conditions and measures related to microwave
energy being confined by an open structure are given in normative Annex BB.

additional requirements can be necessary;
– for appliances intended to be used in tropical countries, special requirements can be
necessary;
– in many countries, the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for
the protection of labour and similar authorities specify additional requirements;
– in many countries, national authorities specify additional requirements to BB.22.101.1.
This standard does not apply to
– Microwave ovens including combination microwave ovens for household use covered by
IEC 60335-2-25 and used in the following environments by laymen:
• staff kitchen areas in shops, offices and other working environments;
• farm houses;
