Overview
The EN 60335-2-49:2003/A12:2024 is a European Standard established by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) that sets out particular safety requirements for commercial electric appliances designed to keep food and crockery warm. This standard specifically addresses electrically operated commercial hot cupboards, heated tops, display cases, crockery dispensers, heated shelves, and tables used in professional environments such as restaurants, canteens, hospitals, and similar commercial enterprises.
With rated voltages up to 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other types, this standard ensures these devices meet stringent safety and ergonomic criteria to prevent hazards during operation and maintenance while facilitating hygienic practices.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard applies to commercial electric heating appliances, excluding household use and appliances fueled by gas, oil, or solid fuels. It focuses on hazards encountered during typical use by trained users or laypersons in commercial settings.Safety and Protection Requirements
Includes protection against access to live electrical parts to prevent electric shock. Specifies requirements for construction to ensure stability and eliminate mechanical hazards. Addresses ergonomic factors like working height and control placement for usability and safety.Marking and Instructions
Appliances must feature clear marking and detailed user instructions, including warnings about possible misuse and necessary personal protective equipment (PPE). Instructions also cover safe maintenance, cleaning, operator training, and accident response.Hygiene and Material Specifications
Defines material corrosion resistance and cleaning accessibility, particularly for appliances warming food, with distinctions made for parts in contact with food or crockery. It accounts for temperature conditions influencing hygiene protocols.Endurance and Reliability Testing
Requirements for durability and mechanical endurance include testing for guards and lids, ensuring longevity and consistent safe operation under commercial conditions.Noise Emission Limits
The document sets a maximum airborne noise emission level of 70 dB(A), emphasizing reduced noise as a non-hazardous factor for user environments.
Applications
The standard is essential for manufacturers, designers, and safety regulators working with:
- Commercial Hot Cupboards: Devices used to keep cooked food or crockery warm while avoiding contamination risks.
- Heated Display Cases: Warming units used in commercial food service to display food items safely.
- Crockery Warmers: Appliances maintaining the temperature of plates and dishes in hospitality settings.
- Heated Shelves and Tables: Work surfaces with heating elements used for food warming or preparation.
Applicable in diverse commercial enterprises such as:
- Restaurants and Catering Services
- Hospital Kitchens and Health Care Facilities
- Canteens and Food Service Operations
- Bakeries, Butcheries, and Food Retailers
This standard aids in ensuring food safety, operator safety, and appliance reliability during daily use in commercial environments, facilitating compliance with legal and hygiene obligations.
