The standard EN 60598-2-4:2018 provides comprehensive guidelines specifically tailored for portable general-purpose luminaires used in both indoor and outdoor settings. This standard enhances the clarity and scope of requirements by incorporating significant technical revisions that reflect current lighting needs. One of the key strengths of EN 60598-2-4:2018 is its alignment with IEC 60598-1, ensuring a robust framework that addresses essential safety and performance criteria. This alignment helps manufacturers comply with broader international standards, fostering uniformity in the industry, which is crucial for global trade and regulatory compliance. The standard notably expands the classification of luminaires, officially covering all forms of electrical light sources. This broadening ensures that manufacturers can design and produce luminaires that utilize current technologies, moving beyond the constraints of traditional tungsten filament and fluorescent lamps. This enhancement makes the standard highly relevant in promoting innovation within the lighting industry. Another strength is the introduction of the symbol for luminaires suitable only for indoor applications, which enhances user understanding and aids in practical application. The revisions to test details, especially regarding stability tests and moisture protection levels, reflect a proactive approach to safety, particularly by increasing the minimum degree of protection against dust and moisture for outdoor portable luminaires from IPX3 to IPX4. This change demonstrates the standard’s commitment to protecting users from environmental factors. Additionally, the withdrawal of IEC 60598-2-7 after the publication of this standard signifies a consolidation of information, streamlining requirements for ease of access. The modifications in acceptance criteria for plugs and socket outlets also indicate an intent to adapt to modern electrical interfaces, enhancing compatibility and usability for consumers and technicians alike. In summary, the relevance of EN 60598-2-4:2018 lies in its updated scope and strength in addressing the contemporary demands of portable general-purpose luminaires. The standard acts as a vital resource for manufacturers, ensuring safety, compliance, and performance in an evolving lighting market.
