Overview

EN 60598-2-4:2018 (CLC) - Luminaires Part 2-4 - specifies safety and test requirements for portable general purpose luminaires (indoor and outdoor, e.g., garden use) other than handlamps, intended for supply voltages not exceeding 250 V. This third edition aligns with IEC 60598-1, expands scope to cover all electrical light sources, incorporates requirements from the withdrawn IEC 60598-2-7, and introduces several technical updates (IP protection, cable types, test methods). The standard supports conformity with the EU Low Voltage Directive when used with EN/IEC 60598-1.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope & classification: Portable luminaires for indoor and outdoor use; classification updates to reflect broader applications and light source types.
  • Marking & symbols: New symbol for luminaires that are “other than ordinary” but suitable for indoor use only (e.g., products using PVC cable).
  • Construction & stability: Stability tests (inclined plane) must be conducted with the light source(s) in place to reflect real-world conditions (see 4.7.3).
  • Protection against dust and moisture: Minimum degree of protection for outdoor portable luminaires raised from IPX3 to IPX4, simplifying cable-entry requirements.
  • Cables and wiring: For class I and class II outdoor portable luminaires, non-detachable flexible cords shall be not lighter than H05RN-F type (per modification to 4.11.4).
  • Electrical safety tests: Requirements for earthing, terminals, insulation resistance, electric strength, endurance and thermal tests remain aligned with IEC 60598-1.
