Overview

EN 60843-3:1993 (IEC 843-3) specifies high‑band (Hi8) recording and playback characteristics for the helical‑scan video cassette system using 8 mm magnetic tape. Published by CLC/IEC, this part defines electrical and mechanical parameters needed to achieve high‑quality Hi8 performance for both 525‑line/60‑field and 625‑line/50‑field TV signals. It establishes test references (reference tape RSE‑5001) and measurement procedures for interoperability, quality control and product development.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Reference tape (RSE‑5001): Defined for measurement comparisons; Annex A lists electromagnetic properties and physical parameters (e.g., tape length 28 m, tape thickness listed in the standard).
  • RF and frequency specs:
    • RF optimum recording current: 0 ±1 dB at 7 MHz (MP tape); 1 dB ±1 dB at 7 MHz (ME tape).
    • FM carrier frequencies for reference video levels: sync tip 5.7 MHz ±0.1 MHz, peak white 7.7 MHz ±0.05 MHz, deviation 2.0 MHz ±0.1 MHz.
  • RF output & C/N requirements:
    • Luminance RF output: >3 dB (MP) and >5 dB (ME) at 7 MHz.
    • Chrominance RF output: >0 dB (MP) and >–1 dB (ME) at 0.75 MHz.
    • Carrier‑to‑noise ratio minima specified for luminance and chrominance.
  • Frequency response metric (D): Defined as the relative 10 MHz/7 MHz playback level difference against the reference tape; requirement D > 0.
  • Signal processing:
    • Pre‑emphasis (main and sub) and DC clipping before FM modulation.
    • Clipping levels: white clipping 220% and dark clipping 90% measured from sync tip.
    • Optional vertical pre‑emphasis and detailed circuit examples (main pre‑emphasis time constant shown).
  • Cassette identification: Recognition holes (notably holes 1 and 5) distinguish normal MP, high‑band MP and high‑band ME tapes.

Applications and users

  • Equipment manufacturers (camcorder and VCR designers) use the standard to ensure recording/playback compatibility and to design pre‑emphasis and FM modulation stages.
  • Test laboratories and QA teams apply test methods and the RSE‑5001 reference to verify RF response, carrier‑to‑noise and recording current.
  • Archivists and media conversion services rely on Hi8 specifications to optimize playback quality and restoration workflows.
  • Component and tape manufacturers use recognition hole assignments and tape electrical specs for product labeling and manufacturing control.

Related standards

  • IEC 843‑1 (8 mm video - Part 1: General)
  • IEC 843‑2:1992 (PCM multi‑track audio for 8 mm)
  • IEC 1105 (Reference tapes for video tape recorder systems)

This standard is essential for anyone implementing or testing Hi8 / 8 mm video systems seeking consistent, high‑band video quality and interoperability.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
3) They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
repo
rts or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4)
In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
