Overview
EN IEC 60947-5-2:2020 is the European adoption of IEC 60947-5-2:2019 covering proximity switches used with low-voltage switchgear and controlgear. The standard applies to inductive and capacitive proximity switches (metallic and non‑metallic detection), ultrasonic switches, photoelectric switches, and non‑mechanical magnetic proximity switches. The fourth edition is a technical revision that updates scope, construction requirements, sensing-range specifications, EMC requirements and test procedures, and introduces new definitions and test procedures for photoelectric type D (background suppression).
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and device types: Defines applicability for inductive, capacitive, ultrasonic, photoelectric and non‑mechanical magnetic proximity switches.
- Construction and safety: Updated construction requirements aligned with IEC Guide 116 (material requirements, hot surfaces, unattended operation, foreseeable misuse, instruction requirements, artificial optical radiation).
- Sensing performance: Modified specifications for sensing range and operating distance and new definitions/tests for photoelectric proximity switches with background suppression (type D).
- EMC and electrical tests: Revised EMC requirements (Tables 9 & 10), impulse withstand voltage modifications, and references to EMC test standards (IEC 61000 series).
- Environmental and mechanical tests: Integration of environmental information and conditions by referencing Annexes of IEC 60947-1 and environmental test standards (IEC 60068 series).
- Annex updates: Major update of Annex A (definitions, dimensions/shapes), Annex D (connector types and normative references), Annex F (photoelectric symbols), and updates to testing clauses.
- Safety and regulatory linkage: Contains normative references and relationships to EU Directives (EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU) and related harmonized standards.
Practical applications
- Selection, design and manufacturing of proximity switches for industrial automation, conveyor systems, robotics, packaging, material handling and safety interlocks.
