Overview

EN 61213:1994 - "Analogue audio recording on video tape - Polarity of magnetization" is a CLC-adopted standard that defines requirements and test methods to ensure correct signal polarity is preserved during analogue audio recording and processing on video tape. The standard is based on and consistent with related technical texts (for example IEC/HD documents covering sound-system terms and connector applications) and complements other standards that deal with transducer polarity.

Key topics and requirements

  • Preservation of overall polarity: Equipment with recording, reproduction or audio-processing facilities shall preserve polarity from inputs to outputs in normal operation (i.e., when polarity inversion functions are not used).
  • Permitted polarity inversion: Polarity-inversion facilities and inverting inputs are allowed only if clearly marked as required by referenced connector/terms standards.
  • Direction of magnetization: A positive-going signal at a non-inverting record input shall produce magnetization in the tape in the same direction as tape motion. Because direct tape magnetization measurement is difficult, the standard specifies the reproduce chain polarity must be non-inverting when tested.
  • FM deviation polarity: For FM audio recording, a positive-going audio signal at the positive polarity input must produce an upward deviation of the carrier frequency unless another system-specific requirement applies.
  • Test methods: The standard prescribes test procedures - e.g., passing an asymmetrical current near the reproduce head and verifying a positive-going output at the positive polarity terminal. Typical test stimulus cited in the figure is a 400 Hz sine source at a specified level.

Practical applications

Who uses EN 61213:1994

  • Broadcast and video engineers validating analogue audio/video recorders and decks
  • Audio equipment manufacturers designing record/reproduce chains and connector wiring
  • Quality assurance and service technicians performing polarity checks and calibration
  • Archives and post-production facilities ensuring fidelity of stereo/multichannel signals

Why it matters

  • Preserving channel and overall polarity is essential for accurate stereo imaging and for signals that are asymmetric by nature.
  • Standardized polarity behavior prevents phase and localization errors when transferring, editing or archiving analogue audio on video tape.

Related standards

  • IEC 268-2 (general audio terminology and measurement methods)
  • IEC 268-11 / IEC 268-12 (connector application standards referenced for polarity terminals)
  • HD 483.2, HD 483.11, HD 483.12 (regional/HD texts consistent with the EN)
  • Informative references: EBU R50, SMPTE RP 134

Keywords: EN 61213:1994, analogue audio recording, polarity of magnetization, video tape, signal polarity, FM deviation, reproduce head, test methods, connector applications.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical

reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
International Standard IEC 1213 has been prepared by sub-committee 60B: Video
recording, of IEC technical committee 60: Recording.
