Overview

EN 61995-2:2009/A1:2017 (CLC adoption of IEC 61995-2:2009/A1:2016) specifies the standard sheets for DCL - devices for the connection of luminaires for household and similar purposes. This amendment updates the original EN 61995-2:2009 text and provides dimensional drawings, notes on retention and pin geometry, and additional test/requirements that support interchangeability of DCL plugs and outlets.

Note: this standard references conformity to the Low Voltage Directive (LVD) via Annex ZZ, but there have been formal issues recorded (e.g., EC citation rejection and Annex ZZ format concerns). Users should verify current citation status in the Official Journal of the EU before relying on presumption of conformity to Directive 2014/35/EU.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and normative references
    • Applies to DCL outlets and DCL plugs rated 6 A, 250 V AC for household/similar luminaires.
    • Devices must also comply with the general requirements of IEC/EN 61995-1.
  • Standard sheets (interchangeability drawings)
    • Standard Sheet 1-1: DCL outlet - essential dimensions and notes for mounting/entry holes.
    • Standard Sheet 1-2: DCL plug 2 P + - plug dimensions, resilient parts, retention means.
    • Standard Sheet 1-3: DCL plug 2 P (dummy pin variant) - dimensional and insulating dummy-pin requirements.
  • Retention and mechanical requirements
    • Retention means must be designed to meet Clause 20 of IEC 61995-1 and Clause 3 of this amendment.
    • Withdrawal force requirement: plug withdrawal with locking enabled shall not be less than 10 N (country note: Norway and Sweden specify an upper limit of 50 N).
    • Pins should be slightly rounded or chamfered to ensure smooth insertion; some dimensions recommended for flush-type installations.
  • Information & labelling
    • Provision of information in accordance with IEC 61995-1:2016, clause 8.3 is required.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of DCL plugs/outlets and luminaire connection accessories (design and quality control).
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing dimensional and mechanical tests (interchangeability, retention, withdrawal tests).
  • Product designers, electrical specifiers, installers and procurement teams ensuring compatible luminaire connection devices.
  • Regulatory and certification authorities checking compliance with electrotechnical safety standards.

Related standards and compliance notes

  • Closely linked to IEC 61995-1 / EN 61995-1 (general requirements for devices for connection of luminaires).
  • Annex ZZ attempts to map this standard to Directive 2014/35/EU (LVD); verify the current Official Journal citation before assuming legal presumption of conformity.
  • Check national standardization bodies (CENELEC / CLC) for implementation and any country-specific notes (e.g., NO, SE on withdrawal force).
