Connectors for electronic equipment - Part 7-7: Detail specification for 8-way, shielded, free and fixed connectors for data transmission with frequencies up to 600 MHz

IEC 60603-7-7:2010 covers 8-way, shielded, free and fixed connectors, references dimensional, mechanical, electrical and environmental characteristics and tests in IEC 60603-7 and IEC 60603-7-1, and specifies electrical transmission requirements for frequencies up to 600 MHz. These connectors are typically used as category 7 connectors in class F cabling systems specified in ISO/IEC 11801. These connectors are intermateable and interoperable with other IEC 60603-7 series connectors as defined in Clause 2 of IEC 60603-7-1. This third edition of IEC 60603-7-7 cancels and replaces the second edition issued in 2006, and constitutes a technical revision. The main technical changes are as follows: - Removal of test methods that are now referenced to IEC 60512-26-100; - addition of TCL and TCTL requirements and removal of the electrical, mechanical, dimensional, environmental conditioning tests by reference to IEC 60603-7.

Overview

EN 60603-7-7:2010 (identical to IEC 60603-7-7:2010) is the European detail specification for 8‑way, shielded, free and fixed connectors intended for data transmission at frequencies up to 600 MHz. It defines dimensional, mechanical, electrical and environmental characteristics and test requirements for these connectors, which are typically used as Category 7 / Class F connectors in structured cabling (see ISO/IEC 11801). EN 60603-7-7:2010 is a technical revision of the 2006 edition and updates interoperability, signal‑integrity and test referencing practices.

Key Topics and Requirements

  • Connector type and scope
    • 8‑way (8‑contact) shielded free (plug) and fixed (socket) connectors for data up to 600 MHz.
    • Intermateable and interoperable with other IEC 60603-7 series connectors.
  • Transmission characteristics
    • Requirements and measurements for insertion loss, return loss, propagation delay, delay skew, NEXT and FEXT, and related signal‑integrity parameters.
    • New inclusion of TCL (Transverse Conversion Loss) and TCTL (Transverse Conversion Transfer Loss) requirements in this edition.
  • Mechanical and dimensional specifications
    • Detailed physical interface dimensions, gauges and pin/pair assignments for reliable mating and mechanical operation.
  • Environmental and durability
    • Climatic category and conditioning tests are referenced to IEC 60603-7 and related test standards.
  • Test referencing and method changes
    • Removal of certain test methods from the body of the standard; these are now referenced to IEC/EN 60512-26-100 and other IEC 60512 test parts.
    • Test schedules (basic and full) and arrangements for contact resistance, vibration and signal integrity tests are defined by referenced documents.

Applications and Who Uses This Standard

  • Connector manufacturers - design, qualify and certify shielded 8‑way connectors for 600 MHz operation.
  • Cabling system designers and specifiers - select compatible Category 7/Class F components for high‑performance LANs and industrial data links.
  • Test laboratories - perform conformance and signal integrity testing using referenced IEC 60512 test methods.
  • Network integrators and installers - ensure component interoperability and performance for high‑speed copper cabling installations.
  • Regulatory and compliance teams - verify product documentation and claims against EN/IEC requirements.

Related Standards

  • IEC/EN 60603-7 (general 8‑way connector family)
  • IEC/EN 60603-7-1 (shielded connector family)

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
