Overview - EN 60512-25-9:2008 (IEC 60512-25-9)

EN 60512-25-9:2008 (IEC 60512-25-9) defines a standardized test method for measuring alien crosstalk between connectors for electronic equipment. The procedure is intended to assess both near‑end alien crosstalk (ANEXT) and far‑end alien crosstalk (AFEXT) between connectors that are mounted in their normal mounting systems (faceplates, panels, frames, mounting boxes). It applies to discrete modular connectors and multi‑port panel connectors and is generally applicable to any electrical connector used for data transmission.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Purpose: quantify signal coupling from disturbing pairs in nearby connectors into a disturbed pair in the DUT (alien/exogenous coupling).
  • Measured parameters: ANEXT, AFEXT, and their power‑sum equivalents (PSANEXT, PSAFEXT) to represent combined effects of multiple disturbing pairs.
  • Test scope:
    • Measurement between any two ports and assessment of overall alien crosstalk contribution from all other ports.
    • Testing in representative mounting systems or worst‑case mounting arrangements as defined in the detail specification.
  • Test procedure elements:
    • Calibration and measurement of the noise floor before alien crosstalk measurements.
    • Specified terminations and test arrangements (examples provided in the standard).
    • Power‑sum calculation, reporting and documentation requirements.
  • Test resources and references: includes guidance on measurement setup and references to related measurement arrangements (see IEC 60512‑26‑100).

Practical applications and who uses this standard

  • Connector and component manufacturers use EN 60512-25-9 to validate connector designs for high‑speed data transmission and to demonstrate compliance with signal integrity expectations.
  • Test laboratories and QA teams apply the method to characterize connector performance when installed in panels and racks.
  • System integrators, data‑center designers and network equipment vendors use the results to select connectors and mounting systems that minimize alien crosstalk in dense installations.
  • Standards bodies and product specifiers reference the method when defining connector requirements for Ethernet, LAN and other high‑speed communication systems.

Related standards

  • IEC 60512-26-100 - measurement setup and reference arrangements for IEC 60603-7 connectors
  • IEC 60603-7 series / IEC 60603-7-4 - 8‑way connector detail specifications
  • IEC 61076-3-104 - 8‑way shielded connector specification
  • IEC 61156 - multicore and balanced cables for digital communications
  • IEC 60050-581 - Electromechanical components vocabulary

By testing alien crosstalk per EN 60512-25-9, stakeholders can objectively evaluate and document connector behavior in realistic, multi‑port mounting environments - a critical step for maintaining signal integrity in high‑density, high‑speed data systems.

Part 25-9: Signal integrity tests –
Test 25i: Alien crosstalk
1 Scope and object
This part of IEC 60512 defines a test method which is intended to assess the near-end alien
crosstalk (ANEXT) and the far-end alien crosstalk (AFEXT) between connectors in close
proximity, when mounted in their mounting systems. Both discrete modular connectors and
multi-port panel connectors may be tested using this method. This method provides a means to
test the alien (exogenous) crosstalk between any two ports, as well as a means to assess the
overall alien crosstalk from all other ports. This test procedure is generally applicable to any
electrical connector, and is particularly suitable to connectors described in IEC 60603-7 series,
IEC 61076-3-104, and other types of connectors for data transmission.
