Overview
EN IEC 60598-2-23:2021 (CLC adoption of IEC 60598-2-23:2020) defines particular requirements for extra‑low‑voltage (ELV) lighting systems for ELV light sources used for ordinary interior applications. It applies to luminaires connected in parallel and supplied via freely suspended continuous supporting conductors or profiles, with the current in the ELV part of the system not exceeding 25 A. This edition updates and replaces the 1996 version (and its amendment) and is intended to be used together with IEC 60598-1 (Luminaires - Part 1: General requirements).
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard focuses on safety, construction and test requirements specific to ELV lighting systems. Major topics include:
- Scope and classification for ELV luminaires and systems, including permitted supply arrangements and current limits (ELV part ≤ 25 A).
- Marking and documentation requirements to ensure safe and correct use and installation.
- Constructional requirements for suspended supporting conductors, profiles and parallel-connected luminaires.
- Electrical safety: creepage distances and clearances, insulation resistance, electric strength, terminals and wiring, and provisions for earthing where applicable.
- Protection against electric shock and mechanical hazards in ordinary interior environments.
- Endurance and thermal tests, including thermal behaviour under normal conditions and ageing/endurance testing.
- Ingress and environmental resistance: resistance to dust, solid objects and moisture.
- Fire and tracking resistance: materials and tests addressing heat, fire and tracking behaviour.
- Note: the short-circuit test clauses (23.7.6.1 and 23.7.6.2) were removed from this Part and reference is made to the equivalent test in Part 1. The standard does not cover electromagnetic fields (EMF) effects.
Applications and who uses it
EN IEC 60598-2-23:2021 is used by:
- Luminaire manufacturers designing ELV pendant, suspended or track-style systems and ELV luminaires for interior use.
- Design engineers and specifiers selecting supporting conductors, profiles, transformers and controlgear for ELV installations.
- Test laboratories and certification bodies performing conformity assessments against luminaire safety requirements.
- Installers, compliance and safety engineers ensuring products meet EU Low Voltage Directive requirements when the standard is cited. Practical applications include suspended ELV lighting systems for commercial interiors, retail displays, architectural lighting where luminaires are supported on continuous conductors or profiles.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity

The article discusses the EN IEC 60598-2-23:2021 standard, which specifies requirements for extra-low-voltage lighting systems for ELV (Extra-Low Voltage) light sources. These lighting systems are designed for ordinary interior use and operate on supply voltages not exceeding 1,000 V. The luminaires in the system are connected in parallel and are supplied through suspended conductors or profiles. The current in the ELV part of the system should not exceed 25 A. This new edition of the standard replaces the previous edition from 1996 and includes technical revisions. The changes include an updated title to allow for the inclusion of other light sources, an alignment of the scope with other parts of the IEC 60598-2 series, updated normative references, and the removal of a specific short circuit test, which is now referenced in Part 1 of the standard.
