Overview

EN 50667:2016/A1:2021 specifies requirements, recommendations and a data-exchange model for Automated Infrastructure Management (AIM) systems used to document, monitor and manage telecommunications cabling and related infrastructure. This CENELEC amendment updates the original EN 50667:2016 and adds support for remote powering / Power over Ethernet (PoE), refinements to the data exchange model, and guidance for importing test data from field equipment.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • AIM attributes and data model - updates to the AIM data exchange framework to improve interoperability and port/cord information exchange.
  • Terminology and definitions - alignment with EN 50173‑1:2018 and EN 50174 updates (e.g., cord, patch panel).
  • Remote powering (PoE) support (Annex E, normative):
    • Type 4 PoE (IEEE 802.3bt) can support up to 90 W per cable; AIM systems that support remote powering must also conform to Annex E.
    • AIM shall document and track bundle IDs, bundle size, number of cables per bundle connected to PSE ports, number of powered cables, PoE Type/Class per cable, PoE consumption and allocated power per cable.
    • AIM shall detect and document PoE-capable equipment, including PSE port consumption and allocated PoE levels; can extract device information via standard network protocols (e.g., SNMP).
    • Management functions include alerts when a bundle exceeds 24 cables (thermal management per EN 50174‑2), pre-disconnection power status warnings, and generation of PoE assessment reports (bundle size, powered cable counts, current/allocated PoE).
  • Field test data import (Annex F, informative) - recommended import formats for test equipment: CSV or XML.
  • Conformance - systems claiming remote powering support must meet Annex E requirements in addition to the general conformance clauses.

Applications

  • Automated documentation and real-time monitoring of structured cabling in data centers, enterprise networks and buildings.
  • Planning, commissioning and risk assessment for PoE deployments (IP cameras, wireless APs, IoT devices) including thermal and power-capacity analysis.
  • Asset and change management: moves, adds, changes (MACs) tracking and integration with network management systems.
  • Importing and consolidating field test results into AIM databases for certification and troubleshooting.

Who should use this standard

  • AIM software and hardware vendors, network designers, cabling contractors, data center operators, facilities managers, telecommunication engineers, and organizations managing PoE-enabled infrastructure.

Related standards

  • ISO/IEC/IEEE 8802‑3 (Ethernet standards)
  • IEEE 802.3bt:2018 (PoE Type 4)
  • EN 50173‑1:2018, EN 50174‑1/2 (cabling installation and management)
  • ISO/IEC 18598 (AIM systems baseline)

Keywords: EN 50667, AIM systems, Automated Infrastructure Management, data exchange, Power over Ethernet, PoE, remote powering, cable management, IEEE 802.3bt, CSV, XML, SNMP.
