Timber structures - Test methods - Load bearing nails, screws, dowels and bolts

This European Standard specifies test methods for determining the strength and deformation characteristics of laterally loaded connections with nail, screws, dowels and bolts in load-bearing timber structures.
The methods assess connections with members of timber (solid timber or glued laminated timber) or wood-based products or metal plates (but not punched metal plate fasteners) in the combination proposed for use in service.
The methods are used to determine load-slip characteristics and maximum load of connections where various angles between the applied force and the timber grain direction, or the main direction of the wood-based products, respectively, are possible.

Overview

EN 1380:2009 - Timber structures - Test methods - Load bearing nails, screws, dowels and bolts (CEN) specifies standardized laboratory test methods for determining the strength and deformation (load‑slip) characteristics of laterally loaded connections in load‑bearing timber structures. It covers connections using nails, screws, dowels and bolts in combinations of solid timber, glued laminated timber, wood‑based products or metal plates (but excludes punched metal plate fasteners). Tests allow assessment for various angles between the applied force and the timber grain or main direction of wood‑based products.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope of tests: laterally loaded connections to determine load‑slip curves and maximum load for service combinations.
  • Fasteners covered: nails, screws, dowels and bolts (dowel‑type fasteners as per EN 14592).
  • Materials: solid timber, glued laminated timber, wood‑based products and metal plates (specification and representative grades required).
  • Conditioning: specimens prepared with material at equilibrium moisture content corresponding to (20 ± 2) °C and (85 ± 5) % RH, then stored at (20 ± 2) °C and (65 ± 5) % RH for ≥1 week before testing. Constant mass defined by two weightings 6 h apart within 0.1 %.
  • Specimen fabrication: fasteners perpendicular to member surfaces; typical three‑member single or double shear layouts for loads parallel or perpendicular to grain. Minimum end length (l) = 50 mm noted (may be adjusted for thin members).
  • Measurement: relative displacement (slip) measured to an accuracy of 1 %; mean readings reported to nearest 0.01 mm; pick‑up points at centre of fastener area or unstressed zones.
  • Test procedure & reporting: follows EN 26891 principles with additions for compression and member separation. Test reports must include material data, fastener details, geometry, insertion method, conditioning, loading procedure, displacement transducers, individual load‑slip curves and failure modes.

Applications

  • Performance verification for connection design in timber buildings and bridges.
  • Product development and type‑testing for fastener manufacturers.
  • Quality control and compliance testing for engineered timber products and connectors.
  • Input data for structural design, numerical modelling and code compliance where connection behaviour (load‑slip, yield) matters.

Who uses this standard?

  • Structural engineers and connection designers
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies
  • Fastener manufacturers and timber product producers
  • Research institutions and building inspectors
