This ENV presents a method to classify the ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials with respect to their sensitivity to crack propagation by using  tensile tests on notched specimens having different notch depths.   Two classes of ceramic matrix composite materials can be distinguished: the materials for which the strength is insensitive and those for which the strength is affected by the presence of notches. For sensitive materials, this ENV allows the determination of an equivalent fracture toughness.
