Overview

EN 13330:2013 - “Shutters - Hard body impact and prevention of access - Test methods” (CEN) specifies standardized test methods to evaluate the mechanical resistance of shutters to a conventional hard‑body impact and to assess their ability to prevent unauthorised access. The standard applies to a wide range of shutter types, including roller shutters, external venetian blinds, venetian shutters, concertina and flat closing concertina shutters, wing shutters and sliding panel shutters.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Hard‑body impact test (D 0,5)
    • Uses a steel spherical impactor suspended as a pendulum (designated D 0,5). The pendulum impacts the shutter at defined points and drop height Z (Z is referenced to EN 13659).
    • Test rig mounts the shutter vertically with manufacturer’s installation details respected. Tests carried out at (23 ± 5) °C unless otherwise specified.
    • Indentations are measured after 2 minutes with 0.5 mm accuracy; cracks or perforations are recorded. Points of impact and tolerances (e.g. distances from guide rails or edges) are defined to ensure repeatability.
  • Prevention of access tests
    • Retraction/lifting resistance of the bottom rail: a specified hook construction and force application point are used to simulate attempts to retract the curtain.
    • Guide‑rail splaying test: insertion of a screwdriver (tip A 2 mm × 12 mm per ISO 2380‑1) and application of force at a defined lever length to check guide rail resistance.
    • Perforation test: a screwdriver mounted on an axle delivers a defined energy (E = m·g·h) to assess lath or panel penetration. Positioning rules (e.g. 50 mm from guide rails) reduce elastic effects.
    • Bottom lath and installation fixation tests evaluate static horizontal forces and the effect of manufacturer‑recommended installation methods.
  • Reporting
    • Test reports must identify product details, faces tested, impact locations, damage descriptions, indentation sizes, functional checks post‑test, laboratory and test dates, and reference to EN 13330:2013.

Applications and users

EN 13330:2013 is used for:

  • Product development and durability validation by manufacturers of shutters and blinds.
  • Type testing and certification by independent test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies.
  • Specification and procurement by architects, façade engineers, building owners and specifiers who require documented resistance to impact or forced entry.
  • Regulatory compliance where performance classes from EN 13659 are referenced in procurement or safety requirements.

Related standards

  • EN 12216 - Terminology and definitions for shutters and blinds.
  • EN 1932, EN 13561 - Related performance and wind resistance standards for blinds and shutters.
