Overview
ISO 2380-1:2004, titled Assembly tools for screws and nuts - Screwdrivers for slotted-head screws - Part 1: Tips for hand- and machine-operated screwdrivers, is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard specifies the precise shape, form, dimensions, and designation of screwdriver tips used for slotted-head screws in both hand- and machine-operated screwdrivers. It also outlines the technical specifications and testing conditions to ensure quality and performance, including the torque resistance requirements for blade-to-handle connections in hand-operated screwdrivers.
Developed by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, SC 10, this standard ensures compatibility, safety, and durability of screwdrivers across manufacturers, facilitating efficient assembly processes in various industries.
Key Topics
Tip Shape and Dimensions
The standard defines the permissible shapes (Forms A, B for hand-operated and C for machine-operated screwdrivers) and exact dimensions for screwdriver tips, ensuring consistent fit with slotted-head screws. Only the specified thickness, width, and length parameters are accepted to maintain tool reliability.Designation System
Screwdriver tips must be designated clearly, indicating tip type, ISO reference, form, and nominal thickness and width (e.g., “Tip ISO 2380-1 A 1.2 × 8”). This systematic naming aids in identification and standard compliance verification.Material Hardness Requirements
To withstand usage stresses, hand-operated screwdriver tips require a minimum hardness of 50 HRC over a specified blade length, while machine-operated tips must have at least 56 HRC hardness along their entire length. This hardness specification assures resistance to wear and deformation.Torque Testing and Performance
The standard mandates rigorous testing for tool blades and blade-to-handle connections, with torque values calculated based on blade dimensions to prevent cracks, breaks, or permanent deformation under operational loads. For hand-operated tools, blade-to-handle connections must withstand defined torque limits (up to 30 N·m), ensuring structural integrity under practical work conditions.Test Equipment and Conditions
Testing involves hardened steel discs with specially defined profiles, simulating real screw engagements under controlled conditions. This ensures repeatable measurement of torque resistance and tool robustness.
Applications
ISO 2380-1:2004 is highly relevant for manufacturers, quality control engineers, and end-users of screwdrivers in multiple sectors, including:
Manufacturing and Assembly
Ensures all screwdriver tips fit the standard slotted screws used in manufacturing, reducing tool-screw mismatch and improving assembly quality and speed.Maintenance and Repair
Guarantees that replacement tools meet required durability and precision, minimizing risk of screw damage or tool failure during repair tasks.Tool Design and Quality Assurance
Helps manufacturers design screwdrivers with standardized dimensions and mechanical properties, facilitating interoperability and compliance with international markets.Automation and Machinery
Provides specifications for machine-operated screwdriver tips critical in automated assembly lines for reliable and consistent fastening.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

ISO 2380-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 29, Small tools, Subcommittee SC 10, Assembly
tools for screws and nuts, pliers and nippers.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 2380-1:1997), which has been technically
revised.

Avant-propos
votants.
