Rubber and plastics hoses - Hose sizes, minimum and maximum inside diameters, and tolerances on cut-to-length hoses (ISO 1307:2006)
ISO 1307:2006 specifies the sizes of rubber and plastics hoses and the minimum and maximum inside diameters permitted for each hose size. For this purpose, hoses are divided into four types according to the process by which they are manufactured. The standard also specifies tolerances on cut lengths of rubber and plastics hose for industrial and automotive applications. This standard is intended to be used with the relevant hose product standard unless there is justification for using a different hose size or unless a hose size needs a different inside-diameter range for a particular application.

Overview
EN ISO 1307:2008 is an essential international standard developed by CEN and ISO, focusing on the sizes, inside diameters, and length tolerances of rubber and plastics hoses. This standard specifies the minimum and maximum inside diameters permitted for various hose sizes and establishes tolerances on cut-to-length hoses. It categorizes hoses into four manufacturing types and aligns with relevant hose product standards to ensure consistency and quality in industrial and automotive applications.
This European adoption of ISO 1307:2006 aids manufacturers, suppliers, and users of rubber and plastics hoses by providing clear, uniform guidelines that facilitate product interchangeability and quality control across the European market and internationally.
Key Topics
Hose Size Classification by Manufacturing Type:
EN ISO 1307 defines four distinct hose types based on manufacturing processes:- Type A: Built using a rigid mandrel for precise inside-diameter control
- Type B: Built using a flexible mandrel, including plastic hydraulic hoses
- Type C: Non-mandrel-built hoses
- Type D: Flexible extruded plastics hoses (excluding spiral-reinforced types)
Inside Diameter Specifications:
For each nominal hose size, minimum and maximum inside diameter limits are specified according to the hose type to ensure consistent performance and compatibility with fittings and assemblies.Length Tolerances for Cut-to-Length Hoses:
Specified tolerances on length cuts promote accuracy and reduce material waste. The tolerances vary with hose length, for example:- ±3 mm for hoses up to 300 mm
- ±1% for hoses longer than 1,800 mm
Application Scope:
Standard applies to industrial and automotive rubber and plastics hoses, aligning with other relevant hose product standards unless specific deviations are justified for particular applications.
Applications
EN ISO 1307:2008 serves multiple practical uses, including:
- Quality Assurance: Manufacturers use the standard’s size and tolerance guidelines to verify the conformity of hose products before market release.
- Interchangeability: Enables smooth integration of hoses into assemblies by guaranteeing consistent inside diameters and cut lengths.
- Design and Engineering: Engineering teams leverage these specifications when selecting hose sizes for systems to ensure appropriate flow rates and pressure capacities.
- Inventory Management: Distributors and suppliers manage stock with consistent sizing based on the standard, reducing mismatches and returns.
- Automotive and Industrial Maintenance: Maintains uniform hose dimensions critical for repairs, replacements, and equipment servicing.
Related Standards
EN ISO 1307:2008 complements various other standards related to hose performance, testing, and materials, such as:
- EN ISO 17885 – Specification for rubber hoses for automotive fuel systems
- EN ISO 11237 – Rubber hoses and hose assemblies for petrochemical applications
- ISO 3862 – Rubber hoses and hose assemblies – Wire-braid-reinforced hydraulic types
- ISO 8573 – Compressed air quality standards relevant when hoses are used in pneumatic systems
Together, these standards ensure comprehensive control over hose quality, durability, and safety across diverse industrial sectors.
Keywords: rubber and plastics hoses, hose sizes, inside diameter tolerances, cut-to-length hose tolerances, hose manufacturing types, industrial hoses, automotive hoses, EN ISO 1307, CEN standards, hose quality standard, hose size classification, hose length tolerances.
