Overview

CEN/TS 14175-5:2006 provides expert recommendations for the installation and maintenance of fume cupboards in chemical laboratories. Published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this Technical Specification supports laboratory safety by ensuring optimal performance and longevity of fume cupboards. It complements other parts of the EN 14175 series, specifically EN 14175-2 (safety and performance requirements) and EN 14175-6 (variable air volume fume cupboards), by addressing practical aspects of integrating fume cupboards into laboratory environments.

The guidance covers key installation criteria such as spacing, siting, ventilation integration, and provisions for fume cupboards temporarily out of use. The maintenance section outlines preventive and corrective activities including routine testing and manufacturer-recommended checks, ensuring fume cupboards continue operating safely and efficiently.

Key Topics

  • Installation Guidelines

    • Minimum distances from sashes to personnel areas, opposing benches, walls, doorways, and structural obstructions to maintain safe airflow and operational effectiveness.
    • Considerations for positioning related to laboratory escape routes and fire/explosion risk management.
    • Coordination with building ventilation and make-up air systems for effective fume extraction, referencing EN 13779 for room ventilation requirements.
    • Recommendations to avoid airflow disturbances caused by nearby air inlets or architectural features.
    • Procedures for handling fume cupboards that are temporarily out of service, including maintaining negative pressure or sealing ductwork to prevent contamination.
  • Maintenance Recommendations

    • Emphasis on preventive and corrective maintenance to retain or restore fume cupboard functions.
    • Detailed checklist items for routine inspection and maintenance:
      • Sash mechanisms and stops
      • Splash protection and internal cleanliness, including baffle cleaning
      • Mechanical integrity and corrosion checks
      • Pressure relief system verification
      • Airflow performance and variable air volume system functionality
      • Sensor and indicator responses
      • Leak detection and hygiene conditions
      • Illumination and noise levels
      • Electrical isolation safety
      • Fire alarm integration where applicable
    • Routine inspection methods aligned with EN 14175-4:2004 and EN 14175-6:2006 for VAV systems.
    • Importance of assessing changes in the laboratory environment that may impact fume cupboard performance.

Applications

CEN/TS 14175-5:2006 is essential for laboratory managers, safety officers, HVAC engineers, and installation professionals tasked with:

  • Ensuring safe and compliant installation of new fume cupboards.
  • Integrating fume cupboards effectively with building ventilation and laboratory layouts.
  • Performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting to enhance safety and efficiency.
  • Minimizing the risk of hazardous fume exposure, fire, and explosion within laboratory environments.
  • Maintaining operational integrity of fume cupboards throughout their service life.

By following these standardized recommendations, institutions can optimize laboratory safety protocols, comply with European safety regulations, and reduce downtime related to fume cupboard failures.

Related Standards

  • EN 14175-1:2003 - Vocabulary for fume cupboards, providing essential terminology for consistent understanding.
  • EN 14175-2:2003 - Safety and performance requirements for fume cupboards, establishing the foundation for design and operation.
  • EN 14175-3:2003 - Type test methods for verifying fume cupboard performance during production.
  • EN 14175-4:2004 - On-site test methods to assess installed fume cupboards’ operational effectiveness.
  • EN 14175-6:2006 - Specific guidance on variable air volume (VAV) fume cupboards, enhancing energy efficiency and safety.
  • EN 13779 - Ventilation performance requirements for non-residential buildings, including laboratory air quality.
  • EN 14056 - Recommendations for laboratory furniture design, relevant to installation space considerations.
  • EN 13306 - Maintenance terminology, clarifying maintenance processes and definitions.

These related standards collectively support a comprehensive safety and performance framework for fume cupboards in laboratory settings, facilitating compliance and best practices across European countries.
