Overview

EN 15154-2:2025 - Emergency safety showers: Part 2 - Plumbed-in eyewash units is a CEN product specification for eyewash units permanently connected to a water supply. The standard sets mandatory performance, installation, adjustment and marking requirements and defines the minimum content of manufacturer installation, operation and maintenance instructions. It applies to plumbed-in eyewash units only and is intended for use where immediate eye irrigation is required (for example chemical laboratories and industrial sites).

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Performance specification for permanently plumbed eyewash units; attention to applicable national regulations.
  • Wash-off time: Continuous delivery for at least 15 minutes at manufacturer‑specified pressure.
  • Flow rate: Minimum 6 L/min per nozzle at the installation pressure; unit must be non‑injurious and nozzles protected from airborne contaminants (protection removable without extra user motion).
  • Jet height: Spray height between 100 mm and 300 mm from nozzle centre before collapse.
  • Water quality & temperature: Use potable water or equivalent; materials must not contaminate water. Tepid temperatures are recommended (Annex A).
  • Installation clearances & heights: Nozzles installed at 1 000 ± 200 mm above standing surface and ≥ 150 mm from walls or obstructions; clear approach area ≥ 800 mm wide and 2 000 mm high.
  • Activation system: Single unassisted person must achieve full flow; valves open within 1 s. Manual actuators: max 90° or 200 mm stroke, max 100 N force or 7 Nm torque. Valve must remain open until manually closed.
  • Automatic release: If occupant-weight activated, triggering load 20–35 kg, basin must support up to 200 kg; optical or other sensors must open within 1 s.
  • Outlet nozzles: Allow eyelid opening and simultaneous washing of both eyes; directional adjustments removable only with a tool; removable nozzles require a tool.
  • Marking & documentation: Permanent ID with manufacturer name/address, model and minimum flow rate; safety sign per ISO 3864‑1; comprehensive instruction handbook with installation, microbiological risk controls, testing, flushing and maintenance guidance.

Applications and users

  • Intended for laboratory managers, EHS/safety officers, facility engineers, installers, equipment manufacturers and procurement teams specifying emergency eye-wash stations.
  • Applicable in chemical laboratories, industrial process areas, educational labs, and any workplace where ocular exposure to hazardous substances is possible.
  • Helps ensure compliance, proper siting, reliable operation, and effective first aid response.

Introduction
Plumbed-in eyewash units are designed and intended to be installed in close range of persons working
in a potentially hazardous area exposed to the risks of burning/burns and/or hazardous chemical
substances getting splashed onto the eyes, despite other risk mitigation measures.
The main purpose of these devices is to immediately deliver flushing fluid in sufficient volume to flush
the eyes following exposure to injurious substances or heat.
Once this is accomplished, the injured person can proceed to the care of an ophthalmologist.
Emergency safety eyewash units are primarily emergency facilities and not intended for use for personal
cleaning or personal hygiene.
Annex A provides recommendations on general settings for emergency safety eyewash units installations
and Annex B provides recommendations regarding environmental impact.
