Methods of test for mortar for masonry - Part 19: Determination of water vapour permeability of hardened rendering and plastering mortars

This European Standard specifies a method for determining the steady state water vapour permeability of rendering and plastering mortars in accordance with prEN 998-1 at the upper and lower part of the hygroscopic range. The test method is applicable to mortars from which disc shaped specimens of uniform thickness between 10 mm and 30 mm can be made.

Overview

EN 1015-19:1998 is a CEN test method that specifies a procedure for determining the steady-state water vapour permeability of hardened rendering and plastering mortars. The method is referenced to prEN 998-1 and is intended to assess mortar performance at the upper and lower parts of the hygroscopic range. It applies to mortars from which disc-shaped specimens of uniform thickness between 10 mm and 30 mm can be prepared.

Understanding water vapour permeability is critical for hygrothermal performance, moisture transport, and long-term durability of masonry finishes. This standard provides a repeatable approach for laboratory comparison and quality control of rendering and plastering mortars.

Key Topics

  • Scope and applicability: Test applies to hardened rendering and plastering mortars suitable for making disc specimens 10–30 mm thick.
  • Steady-state measurement: Focuses on establishing a steady-state vapour flow to characterise permeability rather than transient behavior.
  • Hygroscopic range: Addresses measurements at both upper and lower parts of the hygroscopic range to reflect realistic moisture sorption conditions.
  • Reference to prEN 998-1: Aligns results with requirements and classifications used in mortar specification standards.

Applications

The standard supports a range of practical uses in construction materials testing and specification:

  • Material selection: Compare vapour permeability of rendering and plastering mortars to choose compatible systems with existing substrates and finishes.
  • Hygrothermal design: Inform moisture transport models and help prevent condensation, salt migration, and freeze–thaw damage in masonry assemblies.
  • Quality control: Provide a laboratory method for manufacturers and test laboratories to verify product consistency and compliance with European requirements.
  • Durability assessment: Use permeability data alongside sorption and mechanical properties to evaluate long-term performance of render and plaster systems.

Related Standards

  • prEN 998-1: Performance specifications and categories for mortar for masonry; EN 1015-19 supports classification and compliance testing.
  • Other EN 1015 series methods: EN 1015 documents cover a range of mortar test methods (consistency, strength, water retention, etc.) that complement permeability testing.

Practical value

EN 1015-19:1998 provides a standardised laboratory procedure for generating comparable water vapour permeability data for rendering and plastering mortars. By using uniform disc specimens (10–30 mm thickness) and testing at defined points in the hygroscopic range, practitioners obtain actionable information for selecting mortars, specifying compatible building systems, and supporting hygrothermal assessments.
