Metallic materials - Tube - Ring-expanding test (ISO 8495:2013)

ISO 8495:2013 specifies a method for a ring-expanding test on tubes, that is used to reveal defects both on the surfaces and within the tube wall by expanding the test piece using a conical mandrel until fracture occurs. It may be also used to assess the ability of tubes to undergo plastic deformation.
The ring-expanding test is applicable to tubes having an outside diameter from 18 mm up to and including 150 mm and a wall thickness from 2 mm up to and including 16 mm.

Metallische Werkstoffe - Rohr - Ringaufdornversuch (ISO 8495:2013)

Kovinski materiali - Cev - Preskus širjenja s trnom (ISO 8495:2013)

Overview

EN ISO 8495:2013 - titled "Metallic materials - Tube - Ring-expanding test (ISO 8495:2013)" - specifies a standardized method for performing the ring‑expanding test on metallic tubes. The test expands a short ring cut from a tube over a conical mandrel until fracture or until a product‑standard‑specified expansion is reached. It is used to reveal surface and internal defects and to assess the tube’s ability to undergo plastic deformation. Applicable tube sizes: outside diameter 18 mm to 150 mm and wall thickness 2 mm to 16 mm.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test principle: expand a ring over a conical mandrel until fracture or specified expansion.
  • Test piece: rings cut from tube ends; length between 10 mm and 16 mm; end faces perpendicular to tube axis; edges may be rounded or chamfered.
  • Mandrel: working taper preferably 1:5; surface must be hard, well‑polished and free from scores.
  • Apparatus: variable‑speed press or universal testing machine.
  • Test conditions: ambient testing normally 10 °C to 35 °C; controlled testing at 23 °C ± 5 °C.
  • Procedure limits: mandrel penetration rate ≤ 30 mm/s; rings and mandrel concentric; lubrication optional; rings of same size/material may be stacked.
  • Welded tubes: internal weld flash may be removed before testing.
  • Interpretation: follow relevant product standard; if none specified, a test passes when no cracks are visible without magnification.
  • Test report minimum content: reference to ISO 8495, test piece identification and dimensions, relative expansion, mandrel taper if non‑standard, and test result.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Quality control and acceptance testing for manufacturers of steel and metallic tubes and pipe fittings.
  • Material and mechanical testing laboratories performing tube inspection for surface and subsurface defects.
  • Product standards writers, procurement and QA engineers specifying mechanical performance and ductility testing requirements.
  • Welding inspectors assessing the effect of welding on tube integrity (weld flash may be removed prior to test).
  • Useful in industries such as oil & gas, automotive, construction and HVAC where tube integrity and formability are critical.

Related standards and context

  • Developed by ISO/TC 164 (Mechanical testing of metals), Subcommittee SC 2 (Ductility testing).
  • EN ISO 8495:2013 supersedes earlier EN ISO 8495 editions (e.g., 2004 version).
  • Refer to relevant product standards for specific acceptance criteria, mandrel dimensions, or alternative tapers.
