Overview

EN 13126-1:2022 - "Building hardware - Hardware for windows and door height windows - Requirements and test methods - Part 1" is the CEN European standard that sets common performance requirements and test methods for hardware used to operate movable sashes of windows and door-height windows. It defines reproducible tests and classification rules that apply regardless of window construction material (timber, PVC‑U, aluminium, steel) and supports consistent assessment of strength, durability and functional safety across CEN Member States.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Covers hardware suitable for a variety of window opening types (see Table 1 in the standard). Explicitly excludes items such as fusible links, lifting side-hung window hardware, permanent fixing devices, pneumatic/hydraulic remote mechanisms, certain single-axis hinges (see EN 1935), hardware for sliding/folding doors (EN 1527) and door/window bolts (EN 12051).
  • Classification system: A multi‑digit classification code covering attributes such as:
    • Category of use (first digit)
    • Durability (second digit)
    • Mass (third digit)
    • Fire resistance, safety in use, corrosion resistance, security, applicable part and test sizes (subsequent digits)
  • Performance tests and methods: Common test methods include mounting and specimen preparation, sash-mass selection and adjustment, mechanical strength and durability cycling, corrosion resistance testing and acceptance criteria for pass/fail.
  • Test specimens and rig: Specifications for test specimens on different profile materials (timber, PVC‑U, aluminium, steel) and guidance on clamping/mounting on standard test rigs to ensure reproducible results.
  • Additional topics: Lubrication rules, dangerous substances, marking and sample selection rules.

Applications and who uses it

EN 13126-1:2022 is intended for:

  • Manufacturers and product developers to design and validate window hardware performance.
  • Test laboratories for standardized endurance, corrosion and mechanical testing.
  • Specifiers, architects and engineers to select appropriate hardware based on performance classifications.
  • Product certification and quality teams seeking consistent, reproducible test evidence across Europe.
  • Procurement and façade contractors who require performance-based selection criteria.

Practical uses include product development validation, comparative performance claims, technical specifications in tender documents, and ensuring consistent quality across batches and suppliers.

Introduction
EN 13126 is a multipart product standard which enables the testing of hardware components or sets. The
components or sets are tested on a standard test frame independently of the windows to which they
should be fitted. The standard test frame is intended to eliminate any test-result inconsistencies that may
arise through the variability between different constructions of windows.
NOTE In some cases where the hardware components or sets are tested directly on a test rig or window, a
standard test frame is not necessary. The applicable test specifications are listed in the individual parts of this
Standards series.
Throughout this document all references to windows mean both windows and door height windows
where appropriate.
This document applies only to hardware that connects a movable sash to its fixed frame or controls the
opening and closing of the movable sash. It does not take fixing devices into account that are used to
assemble or install a fixed window or permanently fix a complete window into a building structure.
Where possible, test methods have been unified to accommodate a wide range of window opening types
and hardware. In particular, the following are unified for movable sashes:
a) size of the sash;
b) mass of the sash;
c) frequency and total number of test cycles;
d) range of operations during each test cycle.
This document excludes hardware for sliding doors and folding doors in accordance with EN 1527, door
and window bolts in accordance with EN 12051 and single axis hinges in accordance with EN 1935.

A standard is under development with regard to multiaxis hinges.
