Overview

EN 1866-2:2014 - published by CEN - sets out the requirements for construction, pressure resistance and mechanical tests for mobile fire extinguishers with metallic bodies that comply with EN 1866-1 and have a maximum allowable pressure (PS) ≤ 30 bar. It covers design rules, prototype type-testing, manufacturing controls and inspection during production for extinguishers containing non‑explosive, non‑flammable, non‑toxic and non‑oxidizing fluids or powders. CO2 extinguishers are excluded.

Keywords: EN 1866-2:2014, mobile fire extinguishers, pressure resistance, CEN, maximum allowable pressure 30 bar

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Applies to wheeled/portable mobile extinguishers with PS ≤ 30 bar and metallic pressure-bearing bodies; complements EN 1866-1 (characteristics, performance and test methods).
  • Design methods: Accepts recognized calculation methods (reference to EN 13445 un‑fired pressure vessel design) or an experimental design method. Experimental method is limited to bodies up to 200 L and requires burst testing.
  • Prototype testing
    • Hydrostatic (pressure) test: test pressure PT = 1.43 × PS (minimum 20 bar); pressure increase ≤ 2 bar/s; maintain pressure for at least 30 s; allowable permanent volume increase ≤ 1%.
    • Burst test: required when design does not follow EN 13445; burst pressure Pr must be ≥ 2.7 × PS; hydraulic burst with controlled pressure rise and recording.
  • Materials and components: Materials for pressure-bearing parts require detailed specifications, compatibility checks (galvanic and stress corrosion), and quality documentation. Plastic components (except hoses, pistols and nozzles) are covered by Annex B.
  • Manufacturing and inspection: Rules for welding, brazing, traceability, marking, in‑process inspection and final inspection; special annexes cover hose burst tests, overfill pressure tests and propellant gas cylinders.
  • Test procedures and limits: Includes allowable pressure rise rates, temperature considerations (PTmax/Tmax), and macroscopic examination requirements for fracture behavior.

Applications

  • Use EN 1866-2:2014 when designing, type‑testing or manufacturing mobile extinguishers intended for commercial, industrial or institutional fire protection where PS ≤ 30 bar.
  • Relevant to product certification, CE marking and conformity assessment where pressure resistance and mechanical integrity are assessed.

Who should use this standard

  • Fire extinguisher manufacturers and designers
  • Quality and compliance engineers in fire‑safety equipment production
  • Test laboratories performing hydrostatic and burst tests
  • Regulatory bodies, procurement teams and certification/approval authorities

Related standards
