Overview
EN 12440:2017 (EN 12440:2017) - “Natural stone - Denomination criteria” is a European Standard that defines how natural stone varieties should be named and described from raw material to finished products. Its aim is to harmonize traditional commercial names with scientific petrological information, clarify colour and origin, and improve clarity and traceability in the natural stone supply chain. The standard includes an informative Annex A with a provisional, country-organized list of traditional European stone names.
Key topics and requirements
- Name of the natural stone (traditional/commercial name)
- Use the market/traditional name corresponding to a specific rock type and place of origin. Avoid company names or geographic names unrelated to origin.
- Petrological family / group
- Provide the scientific rock classification derived from petrographic examination (see EN 12407 and EN 12670).
- Typical colour
- Describe the colour range by visual inspection of dry bulk samples under shadow natural light; report observation conditions (moisture, finish, dust) because they affect appearance.
- Place of origin
- Specify the quarry/area as precisely as possible (city/village, municipality, province, country); geo-coordinates may be used with the coordinate system noted.
- Optional / additional information (if agreed or available)
- Process/surface conditions (use EN 12670 terminology), natural features affecting appearance (veins, inclusions, xenoliths, cracks), petrographic name (detailed scientific name), geological age and formation data.
- Annex A (informative)
- Non‑exhaustive index of traditional stone names used across European countries; intended for guidance and subject to revision.
Practical applications - who uses this standard
- Quarry operators and stone producers - consistent product designation and export documentation.
- Stone fabricators and finishers - correct labelling of slabs, tiles and finished products.
- Specifiers, architects and engineers - reliable product descriptions in specifications and procurement.
- Traders, importers/exporters and marketers - avoid misleading names, support traceability and claims.
- Testing laboratories and inspection bodies - link petrographic test results to denomination.
- Regulators and certification schemes - harmonized nomenclature for compliance, customs and consumer protection.
