Sanitary tapware - Shower hoses for sanitary tapware for water supply systems of type 1 and type 2 - General technical specification

This European Standard specifies:
-   the dimensional, leaktightness, mechanical and hydraulic characteristics with which shower hoses shall comply;
-   the procedures for testing these characteristics.
This European Standard applies to shower hoses of any material used for ablutionary purposes and intended for equipping and supplementing sanitary tapware for baths and showers.
This European Standard applies to shower hoses connected downstream of the obturator of the tapware.
Hoses which are an integral part of sanitary tapware (sink and wash basin mixing valves) or hoses intended to connect sanitary tapware to the water supplies are not covered by this European Standard.
Details of pressures and temperatures are given in Table 1.

Overview

EN 1113:2008/FprA1 is a CEN European Standard that defines the general technical specification and testing procedures for shower hoses used with sanitary tapware in water supply systems of type 1 and type 2. The standard covers dimensional, leaktightness, mechanical and hydraulic characteristics and applies to shower hoses of any material intended for ablutionary purposes and connected downstream of the tapware obturator. Hoses integral to mixing valves or those used to connect tapware to water supplies are excluded.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Applies to shower hoses for baths and showers; excludes integral hoses and supply-connection hoses. Pressures and temperatures are specified in the standard (see Table 1).
  • Hydraulic / flow rate testing (clause 8.2):
    • Flow rate measured with cold water (T ≤ 30 °C) to assign a flow rate class.
    • Test rig elements: pressure control (±1% accuracy), flow meter (±2% accuracy), DN15 regulating valve and straight pipe, pressure take-off tee, pressure gauge (±1%).
    • Flow rate classes (excerpt from Table 3):
      • Type 1: Min. 0.42 L/s at (0.3 + 0.02) MPa [(3 + 0.2) bar].
      • Type 2: Class E: 0.06–0.18 L/s and Class H: ≥0.18 L/s at (0.01 + 0.005) MPa [(0.1 + 0.05) bar].
  • Mechanical durability:
    • Rotation fatigue: hose/two-point assembly must be capable of rotating 180° (position a → b → a) for 5 000 cycles at (20 ± 5) cycles/min.
  • Leak tightness and pressure tests:
    • After mechanical tests, hoses shall show no permanent deformation affecting function and must pass a watertightness test with cold water (≤ 30 °C) for (120 ± 10) s at the appropriate pressure (Table 4).
    • Static pressure tests are applied using cold water at T ≤ 30 °C per Table 5.
  • Test fixtures and setup: Details for supporting the hose horizontally, connecting G 1/2 size nuts, and pressure take-off tee geometry are included.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Manufacturers of shower hoses and sanitary tapware: design and validate product performance and compliance.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies: provide repeatable test methods for hydraulic, mechanical and leaktightness verification.
  • Product specifiers, regulators and procurement teams: ensure durability, safety and interoperability for installations in residential and commercial bathrooms.
  • Installers and facility managers: reference expected performance (flow class, pressure ratings) for system compatibility.

Related standards

  • EN 1113 complements other CEN standards for sanitary tapware, fittings and plumbing components. Users should consider related CEN standards on tapware performance and materials when specifying or certifying complete sanitary assemblies.
