Wood-based panels - Determination of withdrawal capacity of fasteners

This European Standard specifies a test method for determining the withdrawal capacity of nails, screws and staples inserted into wood-based panels.
This test method can be used for any combination of fastener type and wood-based panel product.
NOTE   This method differs from EN 320 which characterises fibreboards in terms of their resistance to the withdrawal load of only a single type of screw.

Overview

EN 13446:2002 (CEN) specifies a standardized test method for determining the withdrawal capacity of fasteners (nails, screws and staples) inserted into wood‑based panels. The method applies to any combination of fastener type and wood‑based panel product and produces a withdrawal parameter (f) expressed in N/mm² derived from the measured maximum withdrawal load. This standard is intended for product testing, quality control and comparative evaluation of fastener performance in panels.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Measures resistance to axial withdrawal of fasteners from panel surfaces and edges; complements but differs from EN 320 (which addresses fibreboards with a single screw type).
  • Apparatus:
    • Testing machine with tensile loading and load measurement to ±1% tolerance.
    • Self‑aligning grip (ball‑and‑socket); wide grip for staples to avoid bending.
    • Stiff test jig with central hole/slot; hole edge located 5–10 mm from fastener edge.
    • Measuring instruments for thickness/penetration to ±0.1 mm.
    • Conditioning chambers for (20 ± 2) °C at 65 ± 5% RH and 85 ± 5% RH.
  • Test pieces & sampling:
    • Typical test piece size 50 × 50 × t mm (or user‑defined).
    • Sampling: three side‑matched pieces from six panel locations.
  • Insertion & positioning:
    • Fastener axis perpendicular to panel surface/edge.
    • Typical penetration: 8 × nominal diameter (8d) or full thickness if shorter; specified positions for surface and edge tests.
  • Test procedure:
    • Determine thickness and density (EN 325, EN 323).
    • Apply tensile load at constant crosshead rate so maximum load is reached in (60 ± 30) s.
    • Record maximum withdrawal load Fmax and penetration lp.
  • Result expression:
    • Withdrawal parameter f (N/mm²) is calculated from measured Fmax, penetration depth, test piece thickness and nominal fastener dimension (a factor of 2 applies for staples). Exact formulae are given in the standard.
  • Reporting: Includes panel specification, conditioning, fastener details, individual results, mean and standard deviation, and failure mode.

Applications and users

  • Manufacturers of wood‑based panels (particleboard, MDF, OSB, plywood) and fasteners.
  • Test laboratories and quality control teams validating product performance.
  • Product developers and R&D performing comparative fastener trials.
  • Specifiers, certification bodies and engineers assessing suitability of fasteners for furniture, joinery and structural/non‑structural applications.
